alright so I have brought my bike to the shop and got a quote on how much it'll be to fix my machine. basically the head is warped so they have to send the head outand get it faced so its flat again. his quote is 1,900 also this is a Yamaha dealer

basically just need feed back + he's giving good prices or bad? should I ask him a few more questions? what kinda questions?
all will help, thanks

and he gave me a quote on winter storage 150$

Obviously a dealer is going to cost more than a small, private mechanic would.
They're labour is what, $80? $90?/hour?

ya that's fine I'd rather pay more as long as its done proper. and if my head is warped does that mean my pistons are done too?and my lifters? water pump?

I asked if I could see my bike and he said it has not been takin apart yet. I guess he can tell buy just trying to start it and maybe another method.?

I'm not doubting anybody im actually pretty +++ with this new guy im deqling with, I'm just new to the bike scene and pretty young, causious since I was dealing with un-proper dealer and put my wall way up now.

Well, given that this is the engine that you (apparently) ran without coolant for 20 minutes, it is rather unsurprising that it has a blown head gasket and warped head.

Rough estimates ...
Remove engine from bike 2.5 hours
Remove camshafts and cylinder head 0.5 hour
Disassemble the head (all the valves and valve springs have to come out!) 1 hour
Machining 1 hour
Re-assemble the head 2 hours
Re-install head and camshafts 1 hour
Reset the valve clearances 1 hour (easier to do it with the engine on the bench)
Re-install the engine in the bike and re-assemble the bike 3 hours

Total 12 hours of labour ... quite plausible.

Add machine work, gaskets, valve shims, plus taxes on top of the total, and it's plausible that at normal dealer labour rates, it's going to be in the $1900 range.

And it is also VERY true that there is no way to tell what the true damage is, until the engine has come apart. It's quite possible that additional damage will be found.

Independent repair shops could probably do better than the dealer, just make sure you use a competent mechanic who knows these bikes. (Pro 6 Cycle, Z1 Cycletech, etc.)

For that bike, it will be less expensive to get another engine. If this were a vintage machine with a hard-to-find engine, it might be a different story, but it's not.

It would be pretty hard to diagnose a "warped head" without some work, doing a leak down test, compression test, etc etc.

Edit: Pretty much what brian said.

Engine run without coolant can and does do terrible terrible damage. Sometimes you get lucky though, and the damage is not severe.

$1900 is about on target for head work: $200-$400 for head work with some parts, $1500 or about 17 hours in labour to re and re the head from the engine, and the repairs needed for the head.

as brian also said, you'd probably get either better work or cheaper overall cost from one of the competent independant techs (Pro6, Z1, RC).

Was there water in your oil? if so you've probably got a ton of other stuff wrong that is just waiting to fail, rusted bearings etc. I say your better off buying an engine used $1000? and getting that installed instead.

Hmmmm didnt I say that last week? Now you have to pay for them to tell you its cooked. I suspect bigger damage once opened.
As Kevin O'Leary says.....END THIS MADNESS! :) Just source an engine and be done with it. Next time dont run it out of coolant. Jeesh.

I just read in the other thread about what was recommended, and Brian hit the head of the nail first post.

Swap engine, much cheaper than repairing old engine. There is an R1 engine on kijiji for $600 right now (some assembly needed). Probably be able to get one for $1k or less from scrap yard. Have Kneedragger install, and back on the road for an $800 savings under what the dealer was quoting, and you can keep the old engine and possibly fix it later, or let KD88 scrap it for you.

he hasn't listened to a word of advice up to now, what makes you think he'll start now?

ok I get it but gotta also take in that my bike has 12k KM not 40, mahbe the piatons are still good and what If I get it and there's a problem with the engine they are already takin out of the machine so how would I tell if its good? if I swap engine it would cost me round the same for labour fluids etc ?

at this point an engine with 200,000 km is better off than your current one lol

nah its not like that at all, everybody is telling me something different how do you think I feel, gotta start somewhere

Everyone has said a variation of the same thing...drop in a different engine.

I'm going with Jamie on this one, this is an entertaining thread.
My money is on him selling his bike and buying a new one, any takers?
