Alpine Fastback Shoes

Any advice on where to pickup the Gaernes in the GTA? I think you've all sold me on a boot, and they're my top choice. These are a reasonable choice for city commuting?

Since the OP and I are sort of in the same place, and I am pretty sure he would like to know more information about the boots as well, since these full race boots are put into place and I've actaully owned a SMX-5 boots which found them very uncomfortable and was thinking of going something a bit more comfortable.

Will the following two boots be good protection? or good consideration base on budget?

Alphinestar S-MX1 $179.95
Alphinestar S-MX2 $224.95
TCX X-Cube $179
TCX X-Move $227

Thank you for any input, I am seriously considering the S-MX1 or S-MX2 at the moment.

Edit: also agree to remove the injured foot picture, damage of the shoes is more than enough, not everyone can take that kind of pictures.

I don't know about Alpinestars, but I found the Dainese Torques (in or out) to be extremely comfortable off the bike and offer great ankle support and protection.

I still think I want some shin protection though, that's what kept me from the A* MX-s.

The SMX-5 I recently upgraded to have much more shin protection than my cruiser style boots that they replaced. Despite that there was still a good handwidth gap between the top of the boots and where the knee protection started on my Olympia Airglide 3 pants. I was not sure if my strap on knee protection would work with the higher boots but oddly enough they worked BETTER than they had with the cruiser style boots. What I do is not velcro up the boot until I have the knee/shin guards strapped on and then velcro the top of the boot to fit. With the pant legs opening up all the way to the hip this makes it super easy to do.

For now I am leaving the removable knee protection in place in the pants. They wear bulky anyways so not biggie.

I followed the advice of fellow ADV'ers and picked my up on-line from

www.atomic-moto.com/dual_sport_boots.html

Great customer service, they don't mind answering 1001 questiuons.

So these would be good recommendation for comfort/protection from Gaerne Balance Pro?

Price is a bit out of budget but not as crazy as those Dainese, which I will most likely consider, will give them a call about boot size to make sure i order one that fits.

I would say yes for commuting, around town and dirt road, DS/ADV stuff these are great boots. They are comfortable enough to wear all day and walk around places (at least for me) and offer enough protection to save your ankles. What they are not is a full MX boot or a road racing boot, either of which are not comfortable to walk around in at all.

The price tag is a lot, but the way I looked at it was I commute on the bike every day March to November. This will be the 4th season I have used these boots and they are still going strong. I just mink oil them every so often. I feel they were worth the money.

Thanks so much for all the info, and the first hand experience. I'll be ordering a pair of Gaerne Balance Oiled. Was also looking at: http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sidi-adventure-rain-boots but they seem like a lot for a daily ride.

If I had to buy again I would also consider the Forma Adventure Boots or the Sidi Discovery Boots. Both have had positive reviews from the ADV community (we are generally hard on our boots and also like to walk when we reach or destination).

Also if you don't mind me asking they are shipping out from "US" right? How much did you end up paying for duties and extra fees?

They shipped USPS Priority Mail International (found the invoice in my e-mail). I can't remember how much I ended up paying in duty however. I find with USPS items it is always hit and miss if I end up paying duty, tax or both. if there is no duty Canada Post doe not charge anything extra. If there is duty to be collected they charge $10 for handling.

Awesome, thank you very much for the information that is exactly what i wanted to know, I also love USPS shipping much better than UPS. Shopping will commence tonight.

I ride with Dainese Axial Pro In Boots...Not cheap. However, my choice would always be ride with good ankle protection. Get the best that you can afford. As with any protection, dress for the slide not the ride.
Fashion is nice but who cares when you get into an accident and wish you could have done more. Too late.
Even if just riding locally that is supposedly where you are most likely to get into an accident.

Good Post, looking for a pair of Dainese Tourque Out boots. Buy the best you can afford people, do not skimp on gear!

Got the Alpinestars Fastback boots this year, looking at it for casual riding it's cool. IMHO it's got more protection compared to the Fastlanes.

With that said, for maximum protection I think race boots and not shoes is still the way to go.

I posted a recent video in the Milton Riders thread and I think you can see the shoes in one scene.
