All Rez roads to 30km/hr

From my Councillor's (Mark Grimes) newsletter:

I'm writing a letter but is anyone else aware of this? What do we do? All this will do is lead to the general public being terrorized by tickets and insurance rates, and contempt for the cops. I grew up in all 50's and every child was safe, we just respected the rules.

I think we're dealing with the same manic people who did prohibition-only now it's speeding....

Well that is the problem, there are enough people not respecting the rules. 🤷‍♂️

I am sure you can contact your councillor, but from what I understand you have to put yourself onto a committee to be heard.

There are some other similar threads. Magically changing numbers on signs while making no physical changes to roads is beyond stupid and barely effective. It is mainly a political game. Make lanes two or three feet narrower and you free up space for alternate uses (bike lane, planting, etc) and the comfortable travel speed naturally plummets. I suspect that would also reduce distracted driving as if the lane is really tight and you are distracted it quickly ends up with vehicle damage. Current lanes are big enough that you can be drunk and texting and still rarely hit something.

On the positive side, making residential speed limits that low should result in much less traffic being diverted through residential areas by waze/google etc. Even if the arterial roads are jammed, 30 km/h speed limit and multiple stop signs may mean that the diversion is no faster.

We can’t even get police to enforce people running reds and they are going to enforce this? HAHAHAHAHAHA
Obviously photo radar everywhere. Once they reach critical mass of cameras, they can use also them to track getaway vehicles as they get flashed by lots of cameras along their route. It's hard to escape quickly from a crime scene at <30 km/h. An ebike is faster (and no plates to track).

Any bike recommendations?
I hate ebikes as implemented in law. There are some brilliant pedelecs available that should have been what the law used as a base. The really fun ones are really LSM's but you can't get insurance so they are in a legal black hole. As far as good vs crap, if it has the bosch drivetrain it's probably good but also really expensive. Other drivetrain manufacturers I'd have to look up to see which side of the continuum they were one.

This. The article posted even agrees - useless without enforcement, and there is a gross lack of that on all our roads.

Until that changes the issues will just get worse and worse.

But put up photo radar for enforcement, and there are screams of injustices. 😑

Hahaha. Somebody is lowering the speed limits in Clarington. There's an associated article but it's Torstar so I won't click it.

not to mention texters and drivers. I know its hard to enforce but a classic example of stricter penalties or laws not doing anything without enforcement.
everyday on my commute there are multiple bozos leaving mile long gaps or braking erratically and low and behold as you pull up, they are on a phone or texting.
Cop on an unmarked motorcycle or more of those dodge caravans just driving around would net a ton of these tickets.

I used to see them on a ttc bus looking down into cars and radioing marked units for people texting.

I read an article about someone in Toronto (High Park area….?) getting a speeding ticket while on their bicycle. I laughed hard!!

Edit****
Found it!

Spread the love!
"Twenty-two cyclists were ticketed for speeding and 40 were ticketed for running stop signs, Grant said. Cars were also ticketed too at 64 total tickets, he said."

But its one thing to go after adults...hope these bylaw officers don't annoy kids just trying to have fun out there.
