Affordable bungee cords/tie downs

Sounds like an old wives tale but when I was a teenager I met a snowmobiler with one eye....guess how he lost it? Bungee was pulled too tight and the wire hook end straightened out and let go....I still cringe at the thought!
Bet those ones were cheap!
