Adjusting float height

I am going through cleaning my carbs (87 Honda CBR600F) and replacing the O rings.

I’m now contemplating setting the float height. The Honda service manual says to measure the distance to the bottom of the float when the tang is lightly touching the needle; other sources say to measure when the needle is lightly seated.

1) How does one tell when this is happening ? Even in full sunlight I cannot see when contact is made… the wire loop that holds the needle on the tang obscures view of the top of the needle itself.

2) where exactly are you to measure the distance on the float itself ? Since the float arm will be at an angle to the float bowl opening, and since the contour of the float assembly is not flat, it seems that where one measures the distance to is critical. The manual seems to show the tool measuring to some point on the float body, but where ? At the highest point?

3) is distance typically measured from the carb body , where the gasket would seal against?

I’ve watched several videos about doing this but it’s never clear exactly how they are choosing their measuring point. I often seem them using calipers, instead of the specialized tools, but I can’t figure out how they measure exactly against the carb body and the float. It seems like one jaw of the calipers is always going to point the wrong way.

I guess I am just not clear as to how accurate this needs to be… I understood pretty accurate, but the casualness with which this process is explained suggests maybe not.

Happy to share pics of my carbs if that will help.

Thanks!

I have seen this method described, but does it not require the manufacturer to specify a height relative to the float bowl? I understood the float height spec was a different height, and that is all the service manual lists.

Most carbs are the seam between the bowl +/- 1mm if you’re close and most importantly equal across all then you are good. You may find the actual height by looking up the carb and not the bike.

see post #2 ^

I would consider replacing the float valve and seat - as a set, in each carb, before setting float height (while you're there, shrug)
if it hasn't already been done recently

maybe try a motorcycle specific forum for honda's cbr

best luck

I am a member on CBRforum.com which as far as I can find is the biggest CBR forum. Unfortunately the sub forum for the 600F1 gets very little traffic. Some people there were very helpful when I first got my bike, there’s a long thread about my bike in particular, but traffic seems to have dropped off a lot over the last few months. A large number of the more recent posts and comments are actually mine.

Thanks for the suggestion!
