900,000 students coming in…

The bigger picture is that a pleasant society rich in culture with a strong economy is going to be a lot better than one staffed with lawyers only. You need it all.

I used to think like you until you realize that not everything is about money when it comes to the world you live in. I might not appreciate some of the finer things in the arts world but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t enrich society.

However.….underwater basket weaving etc is a big stretch. There’s always limits.
I have no problem with arts. I highly value them. I have a problem with higher education pushing expensive degrees on people interested in the arts as in many cases, I believe the degree has little value.

It has value for the student if they are willing to pay for the tuition. University is also a lot more than just the subject studied. Most students will walk away with better skills in many areas for one thing.

I pick on basket weaving but really…if the clsss only gets a small number of students and doesn’t support itself…maybe it doesn’t belong and shouldn’t take up resources and space from better / more required programs like flower weaving 101?

Arts have their place 100% and are needed to have a well rounded society….but at some point reality needs to be looked at with a critical eye and the question needs to be asked ‘Is this really necessary for such a low turnout?’

Hell we all did east bird courses. I know I did. But they were 100% full to capacity every lecture.

take whatever program interests you and you can afford without my funding.
Dont come crying to me when you have 4yrs in and your only take away is the phrase " would you like to biggie those fries?"
Pfftt.. Get a better education, it's "Would you like to up size your fries for only a dollar more"

If we are talking arts as in performing, literary, paint and sculpture, IMO art appreciation is more important than the art itself. Government grants to artists should be minimal but with the public trained to enjoy private funding becomes more prevalent. If you're good you succeed. If not, see how may of your paintings your mother can sell to her friends. Or get a degree in a latte decoration.

Underwater basket weavers could do side gigs fixing fishing nets while they were still in use.

Funding could be determined with negotiation between the teacher and the students. If a prof needs $750 a day and 10 students are prepared to pay $75 it works. If 10 more students would sign on at $40 it works again. There will be a sweet spot in many cases. There will be cases where the prof would have to pay the students.

I hate kids. I still pay taxes that help those with them though. That’s the way these things work.

Basic education helps society. I still haven't heard a cogent argument on a three year general arts degree providing a benefit to the student or society. Sure they learn something and grow some but the same could be said of working at mcdonalds for three years. If your program doesn't require close to 40 hours a week in class, your program shouldn't exist imo. Last I checked, general arts is <15 hours a week. A complete waste for everybody. If you can graduate by having a pulse, it is a completely useless degree and nobody will care if you have a piece of paper. If a person wants to waste their own money on a useless degree (or culinary school because it's fun) I have no issues. Funding stupid programs with public money, I have a big issue with.

Let’s get a few things in perspective too:

Degrees by British prime ministers:

May -Geography
Johnson- classics
Thatcher - chemistry
Brown - history

Many others - philosophy and economics

University teaches you more than just the subject.

Hey, if we have any rich folks I'll go draw a dot, someone pay me 50k for said dot.

Then we will appraise it at 100-500k and you can 'donate' it to the charity / hospital of your choice...

win-win?

I'll go get some paper. The bidding starts at 50k..

My cousin (19) is in Business Admin or something something at McMaster. 8hrs/week of classes...maybe 12h as a maximum...spread out over 5 days...

I remember my courses were 8am-3 or 4pm 5 days/week in Aerospace Engineering...look where that got me. Haven't done a day of engineering since I graduated.

You’re out of the loop. Take a photo of the dot, sell the photo as a digital token. Keep doing that.

My favourite part about this article:
"The Canadian Press show the federal government was warned about a “misalignment” in population growth and housing supply as early as 2022."

Hmm.. Let's see what the Trudeau administration did?

Nice. And on top of this is was another 900,000 in 2023.

One more thing... India is a MASSIVE country with 1.5 billion people. Does anyone want to take a quick guess why they are all mostly here from the Khalistan region? (Turban wearing/Sikh).

I'm sure a decade or two from now there will be plenty of documentaries made about the modern day "Underground Railroad" and apparatuses set up on BOTH sides of the countries to funnel people from Punjab to Canada..

I'll end my posts on the topic and rant on a political note:

Future generations will quickly forget what Canada was like before 2015. Trudeau (probably like his dad) has forever changed the landscape and trajectory of Canada for the negative. His policies have directly exacerbated a growing wealth divide that started after 2008 and made it into a generational divide.

In 2016 "Millennials in the top 10% held 55% of in total net worth accumulated by their generation.". God help the Gen Z / Gen Alpha kids of millennials who don't already own their homes or will have a generous inheritance coming their way.

But hey.. at least they will be sedated and high.

And I say this as someone who voted Trudeau... [never again]

I know I said it was my last post on the subject, but I also want to point out that under conservative rule it is not going to be any better.

Really don’t know who I’m going to vote for in ‘25.

It can. It should be at least equivalent to a full-time job or it teaches you that being a lazy drunk is a path to success (see list of british PM's for reference).

True enough but those prime ministers also learned a few things from their education that enabled them to serve at the highest office. I only found one on the list that didn’t go to university. Churchill, and he went to Sandhurst.

Some artists(?) paint with excrement. I'm waiting for JT's official portrait to appear, especially if Poilievre gets to choose the artist and medium. I'll contribute to the cause.

Joking aside…what if the turd paintings result in increased art tourism and spin offs to the economy from that? How many people have travelled just to see a Jackson Pollock painting? I really don’t understand the allure of that crap but it doesn’t mean there is none.

Well if there are a lot of crap loving tourists give Chow another year or so and Toronto will be a tourist Mecca.
