$5 device to unlock car doors...

I think what many of you are missing.

You break a window it makes a noise, sets off an alarm and it is obvious from the get-go that the car is being broken into.

If they unlock the car and are smart, there is not much to say they are not the owner until they are running away. Specially if the alarm thinks it was mechanically unlocked with a key. This gives them more time to do a thorough job and also makes them much less likely to be caught or confronted.

If you break a window, it doesnt set off an alarm.

Only till you open up a door does an alarm sound.

Yup. My personal favourite is when there is no key hole in the door and the customer forgot that he has to charge the remote to allow it to send a signal! Hahahahaha how many times we've had customers come in because they let the battery die and couldn't get in their car. Or the car wouldn't start because they didn't know where the charger was inside the vehicle....

Technology is all fine and great, but a real person still has to use it and think about it.

Perfect example, Jags used to have a key for the trunk. New models didn't have key. However the trunk release was inside the car, on an electronic switch. Battery died, need to boost battery to get juice, battery is in trunk....now you need to climb through the rear seat (if it releases from within the car) and pull the emergency release)....

There's always a physical override to keyless entry, but people don't RTFM and aren't aware there are ways to get into these 'keyless' cars.

NOT THAT I HAVE EVER TRIED THIS

Only if your alarm lacks a vibration sensor.

Don't forget interior motion sensors.

Ze Germans have been installing them on their higher end models for a while. Even if the door were to be opened, or if the window smashed, if the keyfob isn't present or wasn't unlocked with it, the alarm goes off.

Although some of ze germans are also dumb enough that when you pry the cover off the drivers side door lock and unlock the door with a screwdriver, the alarm is disabled. They just like to advertise toys, I don't think they actually spend much time thinking through security.

There's also some high-end Japanese brands that are the same.
Knowing where to pop-off a plastic tab, and jamming a lock, gets you in.

LOLz, BMW???

VW for sure, not sure of others.

There was a defect in the BMW e46 also. They driver door can be opened by a key & can be used to bypass the security. There was a simply correction by blocking the keyhole with a cap, but what if your battery dies??

So any ebay links for those $5 devices? :D

I drive a tow truck. Getting in to a vehicle is a lot easier than most think.

NM found a learning keyfob remote on fleabay for $30 shipped from the US. Will probably find something even cheaper

Hell, the mechanical handbrake is almost going extinct

Pretty sure I've driven at least one car that just had a button you press to activate/deactivate the parking brake. Can't recall what it was, though.

I worked with a tow truck driver after my regular job, for extra money, when I was in college. I know what you mean. Most people would be shocked.

you guys do realize you would set off the alarm and wake the whole neighborhood...

You do realize that when an alarm goes off, at 3:00am, people just swear at the owner and pull their pillow over their heads, right?
