407ETR Average Trip

Just thought I'd post up a friendly PSA on the 407ETR's calculated average fees for motorcycles if they don't catch your license plate on an entry or exit.

If you use the 407 on your motorcycle and see a calculated average billing line: call the 407 and challenge them. This should not be applied to motorcycles and you should, instead, be charged the minimum trip toll. Their published policy, on the FAQ site, states:
"For light vehicles not equipped with a transponder when the entry or exit of the trip is not recorded a calculated trip will appear on the invoice. The trip will be calculated as a Minimum Trip Toll and is based on the entry or exit nearest the recorded part of the trip (in the same direction of travel)."

As motorcycles are not equipped with transponders nor are required to be equipped with them: the bill is to be adjusted from calculated trip to minimum. In almost all cases: this is to your benefit.

You may need to elevate this within the 407 as Customer Service is a PITA.:(
You can also log a complaint with both the BBB.

If you're feeling adventurous and seriously dislike the 407's billing practices: log a complaint with the Competition Bureau of Canada (http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/) as billing practices being different from published policy is against the Competition Act.

Flip plate. Nuff said.

Or split lanes on the 401 for free.

Had the same issue on my last 407 bill. I think they have a hard time catching a license plate when leaning sideways so now I select where I get in and out...

OP, good thread. I have a transponder for the car and I called 407 and gave them my bike plates so that it can be on one bill. The problem is, the billing isn't accurate for motorcycles. Recently, I took 407 for approx. 15 kms, billing was really off. (Obviously, I was charged more) I am calling them next week. For those that take 407 on their bikes they know what OP is talking about.

Thanks for the tip- I never check my 407 bill and just pay them. I've done almost the entire cross of the 407 on a couple of trips on my bike, and since I knew it would be expensive, I didn't even look twice.

I would highly advise everyone to check their 407ETR bill prior to paying them; i've had several instances where i was double billed for the same trip

It does appear that 407 have changed their billing practices for when their cameras can't get a reading for either the entry or exit

So in layman a terms. If you travel 20km one way trip everyday, then one day you choose to get off 10km earlier to pick up food and they don't catch your plate they will bill you for the average which is 20km?

How the **** is that legal?

Who says it is legal? There many things about 407 ETR that are not exactly what you'd call legal. Unless someone makes them pay in court they will keep doing what they are doing ... they have done that for years, no?

Do the cameras pick up old plates .I have been on a few weeks ago .No bill so far .

10th of each month I believe.

Yep. It's clearly not legal the way they're doing it.
Their policy states one way and they bill you another. Log a complaint with the competition bureau and they'll do the investigation and legal action for you.

The 407's excuse for the average billing is that it all works out in the end. But the only one that I know of that sees a significant number of trips to allow it to work out in the end is the 407 themselves. Individual users get screwed (well: screwed more than usual).

I don't trust the 407 enough to do that. For a company that can raise their rates every year significantly higher than inflation and provides the only highway across the top of the city... fukers.

^^ whoever voted conservative can thank that as the 407 is here to stay for the next 99 years since construction...thank you PC gov't lol.
