Who here drives the length of that sucker West to East in the early A.M.? I have to go to Peterborough next week sometime during the week, would be hitting the 401 at Winston Churchill Blvd. and I don't want to be in stopped traffic, so what time do I have to leave to have a smooth sail from the far West End... like be on the road at 5am ?

Haven't driven it in years so I don't know how bad it is these days volume wise, or if I should just take the 407 across, is the 401 all dug up anywhere heavily ? Love driving across klms of ruts full of bits of gravel, potholes too - thats always nice...

Thanks....

i would recommend the 407...moves alot faster, less traffic, smoother roads, only negatives are costs money, i always see OPP

Drive it daily - west-to-east in the morning. Providing there's no accidents (and that's a huge factor) if you leave by 6:00 A.M. you should be fine. Slow patches here and there over to the 400 Hwy. sometimes but nothing major. Once you are past Hwy 404; you're in the clear as all traffic is west-bound at that point. Leave anywhere past 6:30 A.M. and it gets dicey. Road condition is O.K. except for some construction around Yonge St. but it's not horrible and doesn't last long. There's some pretty major construction going on around Hwy. 10 there. Don't know how that's affecting traffic flow in the morning as I don't get on until Hwy 410.

^^^^^ agree with Green Meenie. 5am is just way too early... 6 is good enough. But if you see alot of brake lights coming on at the 401/427 split... jump off at 427 go north to 409 then jump back onto 401 collectors... then jump back into 401 express right by the 400 on-ramp before yorkdale mall. and everything else is stated above.

Thanks - sounds like before 6 for sure then, sun is probably a big factor too - forgot about that, cagers don't seem to know what sunglasses are and as soon as the fireball comes up people tend to go blind... maybe 5:30am isn't such a bad idea either! Would rather arrive out there at 7am or so anyway and sit down to a nice greasy McDonalds breakfast before going to where I gotta go.

Cheers....

That's exactly what I do. If the overhead sign just before the 427 says "Slow ...", I jump off and do the 409 bit. I get on at Mavis, off at the 404. I leave home between 6:30 and 7. Traffic is slow at Mavis -> 410, opens up for a bit, and usually slows again between 427 -> 400. After the Yonge exit off the express, the express picks back up pretty good. Mavis/Steeles to 404/Hwy7 took 45 minutes this morning leaving at 6:47, but over 1 hr isn't uncommon.

For a one-time trip I'd say take the 407. I'd use the 407 every day if it wasn't so damn expensive.

do people still use 407 like a racetrack or has there been a increase in OPP there in recent years?
