3D scanning company?

wonderings

Well-known member
I have a 3D printer I use as a hobby. A client through work is looking to get some 3D prints made of a sculpture of her parents hands. The problem is she only has the sculpture, I am assuming it is hand made by the picture. I told her I could attempt at printing (new to it) but would need a 3D file obviously. I have been hitting brick walls trying to find anyone who would scan and even print if I could not do it. Does anyone know any companies that would do 3D scanning at a reasonable price? This is purely personal, not for prototypes or anything like that.

Thanks!

Cool. You can build your own to complement your scanner.

You gotta be able to do this reasonably well these days with somebody's fancy smartphone, aren't there a few out there with different kinds of depth sensors?

I haven't seen a smartphone that can try to do this natively. Afaik, the proper scanners use laser distance to get accurate measurements and often laser lines to highlight features, the DIY solutions normally fix the distance from the centre of object to the camera to simplify life. A smartphone moving relative to an object would be a data processing nightmare (or maybe just a nightmare as it is hard to distinguish between the part coming closer to the sensor and the sensor coming closer to the part, too many degrees of freedom, not a great sensor package for that use).

Check someone with the newest IPhone, they have LiDar sensors in them that will make quick work out of this.

Failing that you can look into photogrammetry where some apps can help you take photos of the item you want modeled and output a 3D file.

Look for a company that does prototyping

Buy a cake stand that spins, and there is a ton of ios apps that can 3d scan as you spin the cake stand as the phone sits in a tripod

Did not think of using my iPhone, I will see if there is anything simple and free. I am swamped as is, one of our sales guys knew I had a 3D printer so brought it up, doing it more to help a client and keep relations so trying to offload the stuff I can't. If the iPhone is simple and works well I will give it a go. Thanks!

Here I was thinking that 3D printers could create anything.

Wondering why you cant just print a 3D scanner and use that to scan the sculpture and print it on the 3D printer.

Lol there are 3d scanning stations etc you can print and build yourself.
