Our North Atlantic cruise was amazing value.
14 days ....$2800 cdn each
Now if you tried any which way you like there is no way you can do those destinations, including, travel, food and lodging for $2800 each.

SHIP ARRIVES AT COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

We did this one but it included St Petersburg. Again close to shore most times in the Baltic.
  • Copenhagen,Denmark
  • Berlin (Warnemünde),Germany
  • Gdynia,Poland
  • Klaipeda,Lithuania
  • Riga,Latvia
  • Helsinki,Finland
  • Kotka,Finland
  • Visby,Sweden
  • Tallinn,Estonia
  • Stockholm,Sweden
They are sort of like a sampling platter and very low stress.

Best cruise we've been on was Galapagos. More than half the passengers didn't show up, so we had the ship and tours to ourselves.

Alaska cruise is on my bucket list before I croke.

Just need to convince my wife as she doesn't like cruises
I did this on a cargo ship. Cost me $200 30 years ago, included hoisting my VW Rabbit onto the deck in Seattle and unloading in Alaska.

Food was great, scenery awesome, room was basic. Drank my face off with Cappy Siggy all 3 nights.

Don't know if cargo ships still take passengers, in the 80s I did the trip above, Oslo to Montreal, and Miami to Rio. All arranged with the captain on the dock, paid in cash.

My trip from Norwy to Canada was 20 days at sea. 18 days were in gales.

We don't get sea sick but that Force 11 blow kept most in their cabins and the crew hung the little sick bags all over.
The ships are so stable these days we barely noticed....tho opening the balcony door was an error.

When we were helping to build a school in Bequia the mail boat was the only way off the island - fond memories of snoozing on the rail as it sailed along between islands. Mustique was a shark fishing camp with no services at all ....I was shocked when I looked now.

One we seriously considered was part cruise part cargo hitting all the little ports in Norway.
Small ships .... frequent stops - even one with a Northern Lights guarantee. Y'know $200 a day with food and cruise ...not bad at all.

The one we most were frustrated with was the S Chile expedition around Cape Horn, the Beagle Passage and Chilean fjords...small ship with interesting geographic lectures each evening.
We were all paid up for it but got chased home from Chile by covid :(

Can't afford it now ....never could swing the small ship Antarctic expeditions. We had no interest in "cruising" life ....casinos and shopping and shows...happy to play scrabble, watch the wildlife and gnosh off hours.

I used to work the offshore rigs back home, Sedco 710. It was about 4yrs after the ranger went down. We was off the coast of sable. I tell ya some of the storms that would blew up I'm surprised any kind of ship could stay up in it.

I get seasick , moreso now as I age a bit, I think my record is puking 11 times in a 2hr boat race. So envious of those that dont puke.

Modern (last 10yrsbuilt) cruise ships have the most sophisticated stabilizer systems ever created. Using multiple gyro compasses and sensors they float almost flat in 5meter swells. Even waves on the beam dont make them pitch or roll much, if at all.

We seldom eat at the buffet on a cruise ship, breakfast is always available in the dining room, as is lunch , we are never on the board for lunch unless its a seaday , and the dining room is so posh why would anyone go near a buffet? Same with bars, most ships have about 15 of the things , easy to find one that suits.
Rule #1 for us , NEVER get on a carnival cruise ship, one of thier subsideraries sure , but not Carnival, its a ship for "everyone" and value priced so you get the family reunions and spring flingers . F no.

The Force 11 gale had 5m waves and the ship barely moved ( in my opinion ) tho I hit a few walls - damn corridors are so narrow.
We've only sailed NCL.
We liked the special themes restaurants. Some you had pay a bit more for the meal. Worst down side was the espresso, they had LaVazza, and good machines and staff that were entirely useless as baristas.
There would always be a crowd off the ship at the closest espresso bar. Internet was dismal those days got better over time.

I had distant relatives on the Titanic. I think there’s something in my genes that tells me to only stay on a boat as long as necessary and if possible to avoid them.

I have friends with boats and yachts and they know I’m not friends with them for their marine accessories.

@MacDoc , im surprised the the espresso service was off , I’ve usually found the opposite. However these are serious first world problems LOL
I have a nespresso in my sailboat and can crank up a decent Americano when underway. It’s those little things when your doing the night shift in the drizzle and it’s 3am .

We have used HollandAmerica, Royal Carribbean, Royal Norwegian , Celebrity and MMS . Carnival once , that was enough.

We like to cruise. Did a 7 day Caribbean cruise 3 weeks ago, have an Alaska one booked in May + a 12 day Panama cruise already booked in Feb 2024.

Just got this from Holland America.

Whole bunch of ship repositioning cruises that are relatively cheap. Friend's father did a HA 21 day San Diego to Fort Lauderdale cruise a few years ago for $1,200 each * 2. Basically $115 for 2 people including the room, all of your meals + all ship amenities, Tremendous value, if you like cruising.

We like HA because they are not party boats, Mostly retired folks and virtually no kids. Love the dining room experience.

I like being on the water, particularly the sea. I've had plenty of costal adventures, crossed an ocean on a ship, but never on a small craft. One of the few things left on my relatively pedestrian bucket list.

I'm lucky to have never been seasick, I think all my puking at sea has been thanks to my travelling companion, Mr. Bacardi.

im surprised the the espresso service was off
I wanted to hop behind the counter and do my own....it was purely poor training, scalded milk, poor tamping etc
.....
May going to Alaska might be foggy/misty/rainy. June better especially solstice.
You leaving from Seattle or Van?
I've heard good things about HA but I think our cruising days are done...lots of Australia still to see and NZ in May/June.

Where does the Panama one take you? Is it just a passage through from Panama City to Colon?

I did a 12 day Panama Canal in January on NCL that went from San Diego down the Pacific coast with stops in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and ended up in Colon.

I never thought I'd enjoy cruising before my wife took me on my first one. Now I don't enjoy traveling any other way. Looking forward to #21 in August.

Always good deals to be had on repositioning cruises or one-off itinerarys. If you are flexible with your vacation schedule you can save a bunch by moving one cruise earlier or later in the season depending on demand. Good times of year and also cheap are the 1st and 2nd week of December and 2nd and 3rd week of January because it seems Americans don't tend to travel on those weeks.

Only downside. And not much of one , Rudy Soldimer is the head chef on that ship , he claims new style French , but I’ve seen a fair bit of German/ Austrian influence .
It is a stunningly beautiful ship and fairly new . I’d be happy in her .

oops, I meant Jan. 2024

itinerary............

The Puerto Limon stop in Costa Rica should be interesting. I drive through there on the way to Puerto Viejo nearer the Panamanian border. Beaches backed by forests full of sloths, macaws, monkeys etc. It’s a transit port for Dole bananas etc. Cartagena is lovely too. Gatun Lake is a top bird watching spot if that’s your thing.

I don't know if this is the same thing, but a friend was telling me that a lot of cruise operators cancelled their ship orders, and other company(ies?) were buying them and selling the cabins as condos.
