$3000 bike with TONS of character wanted!

Another vote for the supermoto. I used to have a TL1000S and coupled it with a DRZ400SM and it was a fantastic combination for the city. Took both to Deals Gap so that I could enjoy the best of both worlds down there too.

I know you want to keep it under $3k but add another $1k to that and you'll be able to do a good DRZ.

The city performance on the KLR650 and the Burgman will be with a nod to the Burgman and the ease of handling in the city plus storage goes a long way in the Burgman's favor.

I love my Honda ST1100 in Australia on the open road - it's a pig in the city especially in the heat and I"ll take the KLR650 to the pool or the forest tracks.

For here tho the Burgman 650 is the best all around bike I"ve owned but for the price and the use the 400 would be better.
Don't let the anti-scoot snobs steer you off. :D

There are thousands of Burgman riders in North America and in Europe the big scoots are counted in the 10s of thousands and most of those are for city use with the occasional jaunt on the highway which it will handle fine.

Motorcycles are severely outnumbered in the cities...

I took this shot in Barcelona this year
and I'd guess it's about 1:1 cars to scoots with a high percentage of the big ones.

With the CVTs you will not miss acceleration in the city they are quick, just roll and go.- no chain to oil - loads of space under the seat for errands or jacket and helmet.-

If part of the goal is say wandering dirt roads then the KLR is the ticket and that one is a nice mix for city plus the custom stuff sure has "character".
The upright seating is a treat. As long as you are tall enough to flat foot - it's an easy bike to ride and those custom boxes are a hoot.

If you were buying new I'd say give the new CB500x a look....brilliant offering from Honda and exactly what you are looking for. Amazing machine for the money - total fun, super light and effortless to handle.

Good luck - good time of year to snag something.

I ride the 650 Burgman 9 months - the upfront protection is superb. The rest of the year I ride the other two in Australia

Want my Ninja 250? Single owner, bought brand new in 2009.

Its got over 70k km, has been crashed a handful of times, comes with two sets of mint bodywork, one set of slightly rashed track bodywork and no chicken strips. She runs like a dream and just had valves adjusted 6k km ago. SS brake line and new rotors and pads less than 1k km ago. Oil changes every 5k km.

This bike has successfully evaded the pigs and is a lot faster than other 250's. I believe its also the only 250 in the GTA to have been clocked by a police plane doing excess speeds and "racing" on the highways all the coppers in the area had to set up a roadblock.

This bike is capable of handling all terrain with only the slightest hiccups even on sport tires. Dirt, gravel, sand no problem, this bike is even amphibious for ****'s sake...See a pond or lake and she'll jump right in, I'm not ******** you...

If you think you can handle all the character, pm me...

My 650R is for sale. PM if you're at all interested.

Would like to say pick up a Yamaha XT 225/ 250 as they have the added benefit of being good for some trail/ gravel roads. However for commuting, I would prefer a bike with fuel injection to avoid the fumes, so the CBR 250 would be a good choice.

I rode the FZ1 all this weekend down in Pennsylvania, jumped back on the 250 this morning for today's commute. The small bike feels like a bicycle, so nice to ride the HOV lanes and downtown with it.

It's a cult bike that is quite sought after. You gotta pay to play on this one.

Exactly, but it's totally worth it. My buddy has one and its a blast to ride. It's a really light bike with a grunty v-twin. Like an sv650 but sexier.

What is it?

Hawk's are a hoot to ride, but don't age well. Most I've seen have a ton of corrosion on everything except the motor & frame.

Took a Honda CRF250L for a boot a month a go, pretty fun urban hoon machine, but the most practical it would get would be a milk crate bungeed on the back. I dunno why, but it was more comfy on the highway than a DRZ, and it's a 4 stroke with valve checks at 25k increments. Dealer literally threw me the keys for a test ride, he was eager to deal on them, but this was in Quebec.
