Hey everyone,

so my priorities have shifted in my life which has limited my time to get out for a ride. Don't get me wrong, i love riding...but i also enjoy seeing my son grow up...but on a recent ride, i found myself a wee bit bored. being a bit older (with lot's more responsibility) my riding style has shifted so ramping, crazy speeds, wheelies etc are a thing of the past for me and i'm perfectly happy going a bit slower and seeing some more of the scenery...here's my dillemma. my current bike (2002 FZ1) is FANTASTIC. I love taking it on long trips and hitting some nice big sweepers but i find it to be as much fun in the city as taking a lion for a walk in the local park. It's too fast for the city, very smooth on the fueling and not as nimble as some other bikes i have ridden. basically, it lacks character. this is my first 4 cyl bike and i will be honest in saying that the top end rush has grown on me...but what good is that when most of my riding now consists of short blasts in the city...

so...i want to keep my FZ1 for those long trips but i want something else for the city. here's my criteria

priced less than $3000
not a 4 cyl
cheap to insure (as in not a sportbike)
reliable
FUN TO RIDE

I'm having a hard time narrowing it down to a short list of bikes so i'm reaching out to the community to see what you all think.

look for an inexpensive dual sport/super moto? Do you want something to do short cruises in town or something nimble?

what about a vstar 650, shadow, or some otehr japanese cruiser, you could bob it if thats what you are into?

lots of options, you may need to define what character you are looking for

It sounds like a torquey, v-twin with an upright seating position would work as the fun, secondary city bike. I've tried a Buell Lightning and it is a fun, quirky bike. It would be a bit of work to find one under $3000 and insurance wouldn't be as low as some other potential options (like a dual sport). The naked version of the SV650 might be a good option too, and would have lower insurance premiums than the Buell.

You can probably talk this guy a bit down in price...

On a serious note, go sumo, you won't regret it. More fun than a barrel of monkeys, can take a beating, dirt-cheap to insure, LOTS of character and no dumb cagers to worry about

This is a custom KLR with a big bore Kit (685cc), it has significantly more power than a stock 650. It has a lot of custom items:

-Stainless steel braided brake lines
-Supertrapp slip on exhaust
-Military issue fuel tank with large capacity 25 litres
-Vapor Digital display speedometer
-Large diameter front brake rotor for extra stopping power
-LED rear tail/brake light and indicator light
-Magnetic Oil plug
-Custom built pannier rack and panniers recycled from 1950's ammo boxes!

It is equipped with road tires at the moment, plenty of tread left.

This is a great bike for any motorcycle enthusiast, and for beginners alike.
I hate to see it go but am moving out of the country and cant take it with me.

Feel free to call me at 416-992-1354 with any questions

Much fun in the city - upright seating and you can always ride it around the world :D
Bullet proof

My 2 cents worth......went from a 1200cc bike to a 750cc a long time ago and regretted it very much, sold the 750 after a few months and back into a 1200cc. It may have been as much ego as missing the performance...hard to go backwards....just my experience

this holds true with everything.. you cant level down and be completely happy....not to bash the scooter but.... i really doubt he would consider that

now, the OP is looking for a 2nd bike to play around with in town and have fun on without selling his SS, i think a KTM converted over to be on the street is the way to go.. i was talking to someone who pays $150/yr insurance on his and he only had his m1 at the time.

i'd like to keep my current bike and have this as a second bike

Meh..I started racing, and then my streetbikes got sold for ones with half the power....and way more coolness.

Beach guy I have a fz1 and a cbr250. You can find a used 250 for close to your 3k budget. Insurance for me on the small bike is dirt cheap and it's blast to ride in the city.
