I think Aprilia is really stretching the definition of "naked" with the new Tuono.

It's got a cowl, belly pan and small side fairings. It's basicially two 8"x8" pieces of plastic away from being a fully faired sport bike...

Looks nice, though.
 
I was baffled by this at first

but then I realized that they wanted to make more RSV4 Xs, but they can't do that without pissing off the people that did buy one. So this is a "loophole" bike

I look at these types of bikes the same way I look at the high end Mercedes cars, think AMG GTR coupe or the like. I like companies pushing the limit of there vehicles. In the end they create better technologies that we mere mortals will be able to take advantage of.

Just my opinion though.....
 
it's not 100% faired and does not have clip ons
so that makes it a Tuono?

cannot be insured
as it's not a road bike
no lights or other required stuff on it at all

what is the point of an upright track bike?

Does anyone that buys these actually ride them? How many of the RSV4 X's do you think will actually see track time?
 
no idea

but none of them are (legally) going to see street time
so why buy one at all?

it is less of a motorcycle that an RSV4 Factory
that you can (theoretically) ride on the street

and RSV4F is better on the track than this thing they call a Tuono

I think with these.... the people that buy them is 'because they can'.
I bet they sell out.

Bikes released in small numbers like this are thought exercises, not attempts at building something practical for the masses. Sure, it's not going to set a faster lap time than a tuned RSV4 at most tracks, nor is it meant for the street. It's about experimenting with the form to take it to extreme places.

It's fun to see what they come up with, and maybe get some hints at future models for the rest of us (the wing on this is a possibility for the next Tuono, for example).

Also, some folks prefer upright bars to clip-ons, even at the track...
