21 years old - Ninja 250 - Insurance help please!

your quotes are gonna be high until you have at least 5 years on your G. Most insurance companies base their quotes on your G license not your M license. I say most companies because when I had my 250 I went with TD and they gave me a good rate, I paid $1050 a year and that was with just my M1, I think they look at your G status and your M status, but definitely let them know if you are or have taken the course. Hopes this helps, and good luck!

I believe TD REQUIRES you to have taken the course to insure you. As for statefarm, i believe its still 5 years with G class license and not 6 as i recently got a quote from them (Car is already under them so i got a good rate. 22 Years Old, Ninja 250, ~800/year)

Desjardin. $1800 for me on a FZ6R (600cc, sports touring, 18 yo), currently under my dads name for $768

Something's wrong there, is it your dad's policy with you as primary? Seriously, I pay almost 3 grand for my first year on a 400.

Yup that's most likely the case. If he lives with his dad and doesn't get too many tickets then you can easily get away with it.

I wouldn't be worried about getting away with it or not, but if they null the policy if he does get into an accident.

Insurance fraud?

He said it's currently under his dad's name, not that he's riding it right now. I bought my car from my dad, it's not inconceivable that he bought (or is buying) it from his dad. That said, 1800 is still too low for that unless he's either in the boonies, or he's a primary driver on his dad's policy.

Either way that's still a crazy price for being 18 with a 600.

Back on topic. I called Moloche Monnex because my dad is with them and they said I might be able to get his discount but he has to be with me when I call. So I'll call them back in a couple weeks and try to get a good rate. If its too high then I will be going with Mantha and next year probably switch to State Farm.

Have you tried Jevco? They gave me a great rate once i've had my M class license for a year. << Only requirement i believe.

This is crazy... When I was 16 I bought an 82 cb450sc. Insured it with TD Insurance for $76 per month. M2 and all. However this was back in 2006, maybe things have changed.

it kicked the **** outta Hyosung 250's lol..... It was just a bit dated :D

But seriously if you can't get cheap insurance on a rocket of a 250 anymore, people might as well buy an old beater, beat on it, save up for a nice bike when they get the skill. Unless all one cares about is image....

No this is absolutely not insurance fraud.

We dealt with Desjardin directly and they say it is fine as long as the bike ownership is under his name, and he is the primary driver and I am the occasional one, all of which applies to our case. He is legitimately the primary user (uses it as a commuter in the riding season), I just use it on the weekends or something as a hobby. It's also classified as a touring bike, giving it a huge insurance discount with Desjardin. A CBR600RR/R6 or something would be many thousands more expensive.

My bike's an 83, best quote was 2900/year. TD's quote (even with M2 punched in the quoter) was well over 3000/year. I really think insurance companies intend to take drivers under 30 off the road.
