2023 Day Trips!

Quick run up to Cheltenham Badlands, FOTC, and Terra Cota. Great riding but the Winston Churchill closure SB really screwed me up as I’m not familiar with the area.

Weird thing…two stupid trains at Mississauga Rd and I left the Scrambler idling. When I went back to it, all the hydraulic pressure was gone and couldn’t get it moving. 2-3min of trying and pressure built back up and the issue didn’t come back.

I assume it overheated itself…can’t explain it any other way.
Clutch? Idling on a hot day could expand air in the system, probably near the slave. A few pumps might fix, or just cooling down. Could also be a faulty release bearing. A release can stick in cold or if overheated, feels like there is no clutch pressure.

Either way it’s an indication of a problem, try bleeding the clutch hydraulics and testing the release bearing.

Yes clutch. Thought I wrote that.
I know nothing about Ducati clutches, but they can’t be much different than other dry clutches.

I’ve fixed a slaves and release bearings over the years.

I'm pretty sure most Ducatis these days have gone to wet clutches, incl the Scrambler range.

I think the only models left using the dry clutch are the race versions of the Panigale: V4R and SP.

Bummed that my Hyper went over to the wet clutch. But there are still bling options for that:

What's the advantage of a dry clutch anyways? I seem to recall my 2014 Moto Guzzi California 1400 had a dry clutch ... never would've known from how it behaved.

Few advantages: better engagement between the plates, but they do get hot, so open clutch cover vents stops the clutch from overheating and prevents the build-up of clutch dust. Also it's faster and easier to change out during a race.

Unless you have a longitudinal crank/clutch. Still better power transfer than wet, but the dry clutch is buried inside the transmission/drivetrain and it takes a lot of labour to switch it out:

Lets put this thread back on track!

Beautiful day for a ride to see some fall colours.

Norland, Kinmount, Haliburton, Bancroft, Algonquin, Dwight, Dorset, home.

Haliburton had the best colours. HWY 1 Haliburton was amazing. Algonquin was great as always but I took the East end entrance so I was basically riding into the sun when I went through.

Skyline park in Haliburton.

The road to Skyline park was much better.

I've always seen these side road off of HWY 60 and wondered what was there, went up one to Opeongo lake

There was some interesting views along this road but I didn't really have time to stop as I got up here mid afternoon and needed time to head back, next time.

Quick stop in Dwight

and Dorset.

I really need to make some more bike adjustments. Seat first and something with the grips.
New windsheild is working well thought!

@sburns
Nice pics.
I was going to ask how the Givi Airflow is working for you? But you answered that.

What is it about the grips that you need to address?

A couple of things. I find after a long ride my hand/wrist gets a bit tired. I'm sometimes have to roll my had around because my wrist end up bend upwards from rolling the grip down. I think I need thicker grips. Also some kind of throttle lock or a method to slow the roll of the grip if you loosen your hold on it. I find as soon as I loosen the hold just a bit the bike really slows down a lot. On my harley I had a dial to slow the response of the grip, which I liked. I could just hold the grip in place with my palm for a bit without worrying about the speed adjusting. I also had a paddle type thing on the end for that as well.

I know you have ideas, you seem like a solution guy!

Oh about the windshield, I noticed today if I fully turn the bars 100% the mirror will touch the shield. I most likely will get mirror extensions now to prevent that, I hate adjusting my mirrors or when they get out of adjustment!

I had the throttle assist on my previous bike and I found it great for long or short rides. You don't need to be gripping the throttle so hard and twisting so much. With the throttle assist, the palm of your hand is doing most of the work. I have been meaning to get one for this bike but it always slips my mind. This wont solve the slowly rolling off issue you mentioned.

As for the mirrors.

I think some guys get the extenders for better air flow and some get them for increased visibility.

I am not sure about you bike (or mine in that case) but do check if the left mirror has a reverse thread. Some bikes have this and finding aftermarket mirror extenders may be difficult at times.

There is a guy (richlandrick) on the StromTrooper forum that runs a accessories business. Highly recommend by almost everyone on there. I think he designs and makes all of the accessories. Take a look and I am sure he has mirror extenders for your bike.

My Monster has a strong return spring on the throttle such that I was experiencing the same issues as you and a crampbuster like posted above solved that. Just make sure you get the right size for the throttle grip. Or buy both sizes as they're pretty cheap. Crampbuster – The Original Motorcycle Cruise Control

I run Grip Puppies as I too prefer a thicker grip.

Just thinking about the mirror extenders ... had them on a previous inline 4 bike and you will get a bit more vibration in the mirrors so keep that in mind.

@sburns
Do you have heated grips on yours?

I don't think you can use grip puppies with heated grips.

Looks like it's fine ... just takes a bit longer to get through to your hands.

I use these throttle lock gizmos on all my bikes. Super simple, you can dial them in to hold or just slow release. You do set them with a flick oof the finger every time you reach cruis speed, but it's no more work than flicking on a turn signal. $12 on Amazon

As for mirrors, I had a similar problem and switched over to DR650 replacements, they moved them over nicely.
