2021 Yamaha MT 09 SP vs 2021 Aprilia Tuono 660 vs ?

problem with an aftermarket suspension kit
is you could drop 3K and still not like the bike's handling
a new bike with decent kitting can be test riddin first

would suggest a Tuono owner not test ride a normally kitted FZ/MT 09
galloping front and accidental throttle wheelies are great fun for a hooligan bike
maybe not so much much for someone used to controlled spirited riding
hold off for the well equipped one

maybe a Tracer 900 GT? half faired
longer subframe than the MT
sounds like it fixed all the things I disliked about my FJ09 - susp and mapping
it was also a snatchy pogostick

MT 10 just got thrown in the mix too….

Not smaller, lighter, or more fun than the Tuono 1100 which goes against your reasoning for a different bike so I don't get what you actually want. MT09 is too close to what the Tuono is to justify having them both. Same for the MT10 which is just a lesser Tuono.
I'll throw the Monster 821 and Street Triple 765 into the mix just because they've got personality and since neither make MT09 amounts of power so they're more fun to play with with and actually ride.

Tuono is track only.
I’m looking for a fun street bike that will either join or replace my Versys 1000.
My choice was to put the Tuono back onto the road and get a track only bike or keep the Tuono on the track and get a new street bike. I opted for the latter.
The new bike can be in the same realm as a Tuono, as they are for different purposes.

maybe a nice used Capo Rally? ADV in looks only
but tours like a MF
rumour has it there will be a dealer with one on Friday

ADV would be too similar to the Versys.
I’m looking for something sporty, but still able to tour a bit.
I had no problem touring on the Tuono or, previous to that, a VFR800.

Just read a comparison between the MT-09 SP and the 890R in Practical Sportsbikes magazine (i.e. sportbikes for aging men who were really into litrebikes in the '90s but now either tinker with those same bikes as nostalgia machines or actually ride nakeds and big hp ADV bikes).

In summary...

MT-09 SP
- hated old one as a herky jerky mess with a snatchy throttle that didn't handle, but new one fixes the flaws
- great on UK roads
- great motor with ideal midrange torque
- abrupt fuelling of old bike mostly sorted
- higher bars than the Duke
- easy handling, but nowhere near as sharp as the Duke
- better for distances

Duke 890 R
- peakier motor needs more shifting
- hates low speeds
- smooth throttle control
- very narrow between legs
- lower bars, higher pegs, higher seat
- amazing in corners with very light steering
- better road feel
- much better brakes (Stylema)
- can feel twitchy
- poor fit and finish
- doesn't really do sedate speeds well

Verdict is that the MT is a better bike for most people and daily riding, but the Duke is way faster and sharper. If it's trackdays and twisties all the time go KTM. If not, go Yamaha...

Thats the first time I've heard anyone describe a KTM as peaky

realistically, you cant really go wrong with either though
I was also thinking of getting a middleweight naked, but I already have an orange bike with 2 cylinders so thats out

I was also thinking of getting a middleweight naked,
but why. The tuono I get, it’s a super bike with flat bars. Beast (to me) was far more comfortable and rode like a stand alone naked.

I’d say pickup a tourer/cruiser alternative

Only by comparison, I'd say. It's the problem with group tests, because issues that may be nothing on their own can become highlighted when the focus is so sharply centred on differences.

I remember a group test with the RS660, Trident and MT-07 where the chief complaint (besides price) about the RS was that it was too serious and less 'fun' than the other two. This is a product of road tester ego, where the RS was more expensive, composed and capable, and so demanded a higher level of focus and speed to match. The Trident and MT weren't as quick and felt more like toys than a weapon, so the pressure to go fast was off and they could just play with them. To me, that's an issue with the rider rather than bike, but is still a valid criticism if you fall into that category. Sometimes I do...

Believe me, I get it. It sounds silly, but having 175 hp on the street definitely comes with drawbacks. Every time I get on a lower powered bike (not often, but often enough), it's fun being able to twist the throttle a lot more.

But then I think about having that every day, and the big motor brings its own smiles...

MT09 doesn’t need cruise, tank range is 200km lol.

Go old school, $10 throttle rocker.

*sigh* That’s one of my issues with bigger bikes, at least the ones I’ve ridden or have interest in, is the range. My SV could easily get over 300k per tank. The FZ is far less. First world problems.
