2021 Day Trips!

Yeah, the tires are bone stock; came with the bike. Road tires Bridgestone Battlax. 17 inch rear, 19 front. They're good, but not off the road. A friend of mine back home replaced his stroms' rear tire with Continental TKC80, and swears by its capability.

I might go the same route once these stock ones reach end of life.
On my first VStrom I had TKC 80’s and it was pretty fun. They have very good grip on pavement too. Having a Metzler Tourance on the rear and a TKC on the front was my favourite combo for a while.

I have TKC-80s on my EXC 500.

Good grip in the gnarly stuff and they'll acquit themselves nicely on pavement, but they wear out super-fast!
Hmm those statements apply to the bike and the tires.

Nice route!

When Kushog Lake Road is not so sandy and you can ride it safely at a slightly faster pace, it feels like a super hilly rollercoaster.

Also the loop around Little Kennisis Lake along Watts Trail below is one of the hilliest backroads I have been on in Ontario. There are lots of cottages along the road and there are way too many hilly/blind corners to go quickly, but it's a really fun road. Hopefully next time you get a chance to go up there, you can check it out. After the Watts Trail loop, you can continue along Kennisis Lake Road for about 5-10 minutes until it basically ends. It's more of the same, with super tight turns, except the pavement quality declines a fair bit after the entrance to Watts Trail.View attachment 48323

Lastly, on the top left corner of the Watts Trail loop above, you can see a gravel road that goes up past Johnson Lake. There is a big steel gate that limits access to that road from Watts Trail. If you come at it from the northeast end from Livingstone Lake Road #12, it's a fun ride along Bear Lake Road, which is basically a really nice fire access/cottage road that becomes a private road (logging I think) all the way over to the steel gate at Watts Trail.

Thanks for reminding me of Kennisis Lake. I haven't been on that road in 5ish years and ride by it all the time so I'll make a point of hitting it one day soon.

I took the 517 south out of Combermere for the first time last year and found a rather wonderful road. The bridge over the Madawaska River was out though so does anyone know if that's been complete or is it still being worked on? That with Weslemkoon Lake Road/Egan Creek Road would make a nice loop for me if they're in good shape.

Yesterdays ride. Finally some decent weather for a longish ride. Did my clutch adjustment and off I went. Scored a photo tag then headed north

Here is how that went

Riding along Lake Dr Georgina, saw this weird car

Heading up 35 outside of Kirkfeild, is that a dog?
is that a dog.jpg

Made it up to Halliburton, obligatory bike & train shotda train haliburton.jpg

On the way back home along HWY 32 south of Lakefield

Always enjoy HWY 21 from Minden to Haliburton, nice curves, good scenery, and not busy. HWY 118 out of Haliburton to Bancroft was fun to. On the way out of Peterborough I found this road call Stewart Line, was marked gravel but it wasn't and had ton's of hills.

What's real-world maintenance like on the EXC (recreational, not race conditions)?

I've been pretty anal about oil changes, sticking to the recommended 15-hour intervals. The oil looks pretty black when it comes out.

Took it to the dealership once for some warranty work, they changed the oil because they said it looked pretty dark. They basically shamed us into an oil change, even though it only had only been 9 hours since the last oil change...

DF?!?

Anecdotally, the guys on ADV and Thumpertalk say you can go 5000 kms between oil changes if you're not racing, but I'm not sure if their experience is relevant to the 2017+ EXCs which went from 1.5L oil capacity down to 1.2L.

In 5000 kms, I've probably changed out the oil 4 times already! But I've done it often it enough, I can do both our bikes together in under an hour.

I do use the special, fancy Swiss oil KTM recommends. Pricey stuff ~$100 for 4L. Filters every other oil change.

Other than that, it's just cleaning/swapping out the air filter, which only becomes tedious in the middle of the summer when it gets drier and dustier.

valve checks in kms i hope not hours

It's a dirt bike, albeit street-legal. Everything's in hours.

Valve check every 30 hours.
Depends how high you're revving it between oil changes. If it's to the bar on the road between trails then yes you'll want to stick to the recommended oil change interval. If less aggressive you're fine to follow the advice of the ADV/Thumpertalk crew. The Motorex stuff is fine but most just use Rotella.

You guys can get away with 0w40 or 5w40?

Yes. Both my Ducati and KTM get Rotella T6 5w40. Top Ducati tech ok'd it so that's what it gets. I'm not starting an oil chat, that's all I'm saying.
KTM also recommends a new top end around 40hrs. Most singletrack riders change it between 200-300hrs.

Yeah, no oil chat. Like you, I also follow the recommendations of the techs who know my bikes. I do use Rotella in my Hawk, though!

Nice ride!! Can't believe you detoured for a photo tag first :)

We have a cottage on Monck Lake (hwy 118 and loop rd), and there is a road just West of Loop rd that heads South called "Dyno Road" (hwy 48). It might also be marked as gravel on gps, but it's now a paved road with a lot of twists and turns, especially the South half. If you aren't interested in hitting Bancroft it will shave off some rather straight hwy sections, but even if you still do want to hit Bancroft for lunch or something it's not that much of a detour.

Thanks for the tip! I may have noticed it on my ride. But for some reason I made it a point to get to Bancroft, even though all I did was gas up and turn around... :ROFLMAO: I will give it a go next time!
