I'm thinking about a new car. Got my eyes on the Elantra, heard good reviews. I could do a google but I'm getting mixed messages. I can't ask questions on google, so gonna post here and see what the responses are.

Let me know what you think if u have one

Check into the crash test rating .. i think they dont crash very well into things, hence you will pay higher insurance premiums.

Father in-law just bought a sonata. Test drove both the elantra and the sonata. Seem like very well built cars. Drive well with lots of features etc. A lot of car for the money.

Both Hyundai and KIA have beaten the Japanese. They're targets were the Germans car makers. They are getting there.

Didn't look into that, thanks

Thats why I;m so attracted to it. It's a lot of car for the money. The styling & interior is really good for an entry level car.

I'm just tired of working on my car every month. Especially during summer, I prefer to be riding or fixing the bike

not the sexiest thing out there, but very good value.

I might also add that the dealer rates for labour are cheaper than almost anyone else. So your back end costs are also lower.

Looking at a few links and they all appear +ve

As reported yesterday, the new small Hyundai sedan scored 33.21 points out of 37, giving it a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

It scored 14.24 out of 16 for the offset frontal crash test and 13.97 out of 16 in the side impact crash test. The report said there was a slight risk of serious chest injury for the driver and a slight risk of lower leg injury for the driver and passenger. It also scored five bonus points for completing the pole test and for having seatbelt reminders fitted standard for front and rear passengers.

I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I found it to be one of the best looking car out there.

A friend of mine just bought a 2011 Elentra that I helped to check out. It is a pretty good car for the class compare to toyota matrix and Honda civic. its cheaper, more stylish, and you get more features than what other brands offer.

$23k before fees and tax for a brand new 2012 Elentra GL class i think? the middle level package. And Toyota wanted $23k for a used 2011 Matrix.

We test drove a few nissan and hondas as well and the entry level cars felt REALLY cheap and cost more then the Hyundai. The Corolla was nice but once everything was added the price was just not right.

With the incentives etc at the time He got the Sonata for $25k drive away. For the build quality and features you just cant beat that. Not to mention fuel economy on these things is insane. For a full size sedan its getting 600+kms on a 70L tank ALL city driving, on the hwy its even higher. The Elantra is even better on fuel. First Oil change is at 6k for about $40 from the dealer.

I had an Elantra rental for a week not long ago. It was a nice car..cheap..but it is what it is. FWIW, I found it fairly poor handling..more Corolla than Civic. Again..it's cheap so you won't get everything. All in all, I'd have no problem recommending it over the others these days.

Just remember these very words when the warranty expires on your Hyundai.

If the Hyundai strikes your fancy, go for it. People always ask me for car opinions and I always tell them to buy what they like. Its their money.

Having said that, when I come to buy or recommend cars, Hyundais never make my list for many reasons.

I'll just point out one reason, for example, There is a reason why they are "cheap". And yes, Hyundai has come a long way.

I tend to trust Consumer Reports with their reliability ratings, because they poll people that actually have owned their cars for a while. They are not swayed by auto makers and advertising revenue like other places.

"Reliability methodology
Findings are based on responses on 1.3 million vehicles owned or leased by subscribers to Consumer Reports or ConsumerReports.org. Conducted by Consumer Reports’ National Survey Research Center, the survey covers model years 2002 to 2011.

Japanese brands continue to dominate Consumer Reports survey’s upper echelons and took the top nine spots. They were led by Scion, Lexus, Acura, Mazda, Honda, and Toyota. Of the 91 Japanese models for which Consumer Reports has sufficient data, 87 (96 percent) were rated average or better in predicted reliability; 24 Japanese models earned the highest rating."

If you plan on keeping the car for long term, I'd bet on Honda or Toyota.

I used to say that..but my 2007 Civic has had a cracked engine block, cracked and peeling hood paint, incorrect rear upper control arms, alternator (at 100,000kms..) and MAF sensor (60,000kms). Not to mention the factory alignment was out 4 degrees between left and right toe-in..

Nobody said they were perfect. Just that the odds of having a reliable car with few problems is exponentially better than anything from Germany or Korea.

I've spoken to plenty of people over the years with 2, 3, 400k+ on their Hondas and Toyotas and have gushed about how reliable they are.

LOL, maybe I should pick up a used Lexus. Thats my other option

I think Honda has gone down in quality as we used to know it. Been to the auto shows throughout the years and I can tell u they don't build them as they used to. My 1st car was a civic. Never had car problems

I presently have a 2000 BMW and I want to drive it over a cliff. Recently I found out I have a cracked subframe, go figure.

Have owned 3 Hyundais, all 3 have been great, presently have a 2005 Elantra an excellent basic car. No problem with the car or its accessories, almost bulletproof in my opinion #1 choice for my next car at this time.
The comment about dealership service is accurate in my experience. The only dearlerships that ever gave me the sale price on work when I did not know that service was on special and I did not present the coupon for the special.
Also the only dealers I ever had say to me "We did not charge you for all the labour on servce X because we had much of the labour already done for service Y.

My biggest complaint, do not trust the DOT or Hyundai gas consumption estimates
If anything Hyundai must really engineer their fuel consumption to do well on the DOT test Real life driving does not come close, even if I drive so gently that my grandmother would kick my ***** for driving so slow
My car is to get 45mpg highway and I average 33mpg
The 2012 claims about 48 highway/city combined but real life experience listed on "fuely" is about 35 so if you are buying for gas savings be prepared to be disappointed
