Watching a few crash videos will quickly persuade you to buy some gear. I have seen what has happened in the event of a slow lowside WITH gear and its not pretty.
Also my riding instructor had passed last year on a bike from the result of a car accident in front of her. She wore full gear and from what I remember a reflective vest.
For me - full gear is a must. Even some people that run from popos have enough sense to wear full gear.
In the end, it is your decision if you want to take that gamble and let drivers around you decide your fate if they were to turn in to you because of the ever so often "I didn't see you".
