$200 for 300g a helmet conundrum

Down to 4 choices….for today anyway…

Nexx X Wed 2 (normal shell) -
pros: I know it will fit, it’s cheap (ish), not super heavy, already have a comms kit for it. It’s an update. Can now get a transitions shield.
cons: it’s not super light, might not be the quietest, it’s not totally new, more of an update

Nexx X Wed 2 (carbon shell)
pros: I know it will fit, it’s lighter, already have a comms kit for it, you can get a transitions shield
cons: it’s more expensive, missing the side plate mounts for camera and goggle straps (that I use), might not be the quietest

Nexx Vilijord carbon
pros: it’s new…I like new things, adv modular helmet so handy at stops/getting gas/talking, supposedly quiet for a modular helmet, it has a peak for sunshade. It’s heavy for a helmet but light/average for a modular, you can get a transitions shield for it. safety ratings for both chin bar up and down modes. Vents well from reviews.
cons: can’t remove the peak, needs a purchase of a pricy comms kit (but it’s a sleek built in one), slightly unknown fit but should be a standard Nexx fit which is good for me.

Schuberth C4 pro
pros: supposedly the quiestest (modular) of the bunch but the Vilijord is reported to be very close, integrated comms kit is relatively inexpensive, supposedly the most premium of the helmets listed.
cons: unknown fit although everything suggests it will be fine, no peak (the E1 is based on an older model so I’m not considering that). Heaviest of all the helmets here. Supposedly does not vent as well (might be a moot point considering you can flip the chin bar up or ride with the sun visor down and shield open. Oddly not safety rated for chin bar up riding (which I do sometimes when it’s really hot/at slow speeds).

I have a horrible feeling I might end up getting two helmets. A modular for touring where I’m unlikely to head off-road and also used more for cooler weather riding and a dual sport lid for hot weather riding or off-road/mix with goggles or visor.

I have to check my piggy bank.

Ok…so I stopped farting about and ordered something.

To make this…

When I’ve saved some cash up I’ll get a modular for road touring (unless this lid turns out to be fine for everything. I think I’d like the convenience of a modular again though). Hopefully by that time the C4pro carbons are cheaper or the C5s come down in price or the Vilijord gets more reviews and colour schemes.

Cool, I didn't know the X.WED2s had tinted visors available. Gonna pick one of those up as well.

Enjoy the new lid!

One last Q…can you ride with the chin bar up with the C4 pro? Does it have a detente setting for keeping it raised or will it slam down? I know it’s not safetied for the J configuration.

Nice! Post up some pix!

Just waiting on the new shield!

Chromeburner is awesome by the way. The box was missing some parts…or so I thought. The ergo cheek pad fitting system and the sun visor shade dust shield. Contacted Chromeburner by email and they got back to me in 10 mins and told me those parts aren’t included by Nexx anymore and their new owner’s manuals had updated info but if I wanted them they would send them to me. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy a new lid from them.

There wasn't much talk about buffeting which caused me more pain than weight.

My old Connie had a Rifle windshield with the venturi gap and it would almost stream the air over my head but if I lifted my visor a notch or two the visor continued the deflection and the noise / comfort level became far better.

The visor was still low enough to protect my eyes.

Ever since I’ve been riding I’ve been trying to minimize noise. Like I mentioned before I have tinnitus. When I was a kid I had ”grommets” surgically placed in my ears as I had pressure build up inside which led to balance problems. That surgery was fine and I can walk in straight lines now lol but I think that’s partly to blame for my tinnitus. That and concerts/farting about with fireworks/shooting etc. Anyway….I’ve bought helmet skirts/lightweight helmets/add on windshields etc etc. I always used earplugs and have tried the custom moulded ones, expensive hearing specialist moulded ones, and the ones that work the best, plain old foam Howard Leight ones. Here’s the conclusion I’ve come to…

You’ll never get rid of noise on the bike but you can minimize it but it depends on a lot of things that can change even day to day.

Some of my most pleasant rides have been late in the evening in still air at 100kmh+ and then it’s been almost serene at times. I started wondering if air density had anything to do with things as evening rides in cooler air seemed to be the quietest.

If it’s windy out…it’s going to be loud. Standing on my pegs with my head out of the windshield turbulence zone it can be quiet too.

I’m hoping this new helmet will be reasonably quiet but the weight will definitely help my neck issues. It does look super cool though! I’m digging the carbon fibre look.

Looks pretty good I think. Takes a pinlock too so order one with the visor!

Waiting for the ergofit kit as I need to tinker with the fit a bit. Its slighly looser than my XD1 even though they are the same size helmets. Not a deal breaker though.
