$200 for 300g a helmet conundrum

So..the birds are squawking outside my window and Spring seems just around the corner. My favourite helmet (a Nexx XD1) is about 6 years old and I figure it might be time to get a new one. Chromeburner has excellent prices and a sale on one model I want. The Nexx X.Wed2 . The conundrum is this…I’m older and with age come aches and pains. One of these is a neck problem that shows up every now and then. So I’m looking at lightweight helmets. The X.Wed2 is already pretty light at about 1700g but there’s a carbon version for $200 more that weights in at 300g lighter.

What to do?

The base model is a steal at the sale price, with discount coupons it comes to about $350 CDN . If I add a couple of accessories like spare shields etc it’s free shipping at $450Cdn too. The carbon version is $550. I can swap over my integrated communication system directly from my old helmet too.

Would you pay $200 to shave 300g?

Or…..should I look at other helmets? I want lightweight and quiet in an ADV style…which don’t always go together.

I think its personal and dependent on how tired or sore your neck and shoulders get wearing a heavy helmet.

In my helmet collection, the lightest helmet I have is 1450g, the heaviest is just under 1800g.

Although you can feel the difference between the two in your hand, when both helmets are on my head the extra weight is negligible and I can do equal time and distance on all helmets. I find other parts of my body will fatique faster than my neck and shoulders.

IMHO YMMV BRB LOL WTF BBQ

Lighter may also mean that it's louder. Not necessarily...but as weight shaves, so do other things.

I'd prefer lighter and accept louder as I can help the noise with ear plugs. I can't make it lighter, and after 8-10hrs of riding...you'll feel the difference.

It’s how that weight is balanced too. I’m also a sucker for a good deal and the base Nexx helmet is a good price and I know it will fit as the shell and shape hasn’t changed much from the previous version. The previous version didn’t really cause issues with my neck either.

I wouldn’t mind a unicorn helmet which is quiet and light. The Schuberth’s are supposed to be quiet but they don’t look especially light from their specs.

I’ve had tinnitus since I was a kid. It’s gradually getting more noticeable so the quiet thing would be good too. I wear earplugs all the time anyway while riding.

I can afford a bit more for a helmet this time which is why I have the conundrum. But I also have to balance that with value.

I'm a cheap mofo...so value / budget is very top of the list for me.

AGV K6, 2.7lbs ish, roughly 1220grams.

Comes in some pretty nice colours/graphics which can get pricey. It’s relatively quiet.

Headshape is key. I’d try it on at GP bikes/wherever possible if I were you.

Biased opinion because i own one and it’s my favourite lid to date.

I saw that. Years ago I tried on an AGV and it wasn’t comfy for me otherwise it would be a definite contender. Looks like from WBW I’m “intermediate oval” for head shape. I’ve always fancied a Shoei helmet, the hornet fits me well, but they seem pretty heavy compared to many others.

Pay the extra and be done I have the agv ax9 and love it

AGV K6 is intermediate oval iirc. I barely fit in it (very minor forehead pressure before it broke in). The RPHA 70ST? was my first choice but during try on I had massive forehead and neck presssure, it’s an intermediate oval lid.

It fits differently from my K3 SV

I have owned the C3 and C3 Pro, and my wife has a C4 Pro. The thing with the Schuberths is that they achieve their low noise rating primarily due to the chin curtain that blocks noisy air flow from the bottom of the helmet. But it also gets very hot and stuffy with that chin curtain in place. The minute you remove the chin curtain, it's as noisy as any other modular/full face helmet out there.

I just noticed that you are looking at the X.WED2 Carbon. I have the Vaal Carbon version and it is a great helmet. Yes, it's light in the hand, but it is also noticeably louder than the rest of my other ADV helmets.

But the noise factor is pretty much a moot point if you wear earplugs.

Thanks. Yes, that’s the one I was looking at. Not a ton of reviews out there for it but one difference between the carbon version and the normal one are the visor side plates that are lacking on the Vaal. I have some quick release visor straps that fit to special side plates on my old Nexx XD1 that will work on the standard one. I also have a tube cam mounted to one of those side plates too.

So another consideration is can I deal with normal goggle straps (the horror…first world problems) and a bit more importantly the helmet cam (which I don’t like right on the top of my noggin) if I get the carbon version.

I ride with earplugs all the time too.

I have the helmet you’re looking at.
It’s OK - the comfort is great, but the final fit/finish is a bit lacking. If I had the choice to do it again, I’d likely go with another LS2 or Shoei.

Some helmets can be uncomfortable at first but get better

The Shoei Hornet X2 is generally regarded as the porker among ADV lids. It may be so, but that weight disappears once the helmet is on. All day comfortable for me, never any neck pain.

How does Neda like the C4pro? I did a bit of a reassessment and might just refresh the liner of my old helmet and get something different. Chrome burner has the C4pro and the standard comms kit for about $600 ish delivered. The C3pro and C4pro are supposed to have similar fits so how do you find the fit compared to the NEXX? Do you mind me asking what size you take in both?

I used to have an old Shark modular which I really liked for convenience but that was a real porker of a helmet. These new ones seem a lot lighter now.

Is not spending the extra going to bother you down the road (no pun intended) whenever you're wearing it? If you plan to trash the helmet after 6 years, the extra $200 works out to $34/yr. Just sayin'...

Hmm…or, take the Nexx X.Wed and add the Schuberth C4 put in a blender and get….

1700g, carbon shell, seems to review well. Only issue seems to be a non-removable peak but I haven’t removed the peak from my Nexx XD1 since I had it.

Neda loves the C4 Pro. She got the women's version which has a super-soft liner and larger cheek pads to accommodate smaller heads.

On the C3 Pro, I wear a 56/57 M and on the X.WED2 I wear size 57/58 M. Both helmets are sized similarly, when I first got the C3 Pro, it was a bit tight so I had to stretch out the pads a little bit, the X.WED2 was a perfect fit right off the bat.

If you going to go with the Schuberth, I would pass on the OE comms. Although it's a rebranded Sena, it's a generation behind what the current gen Sena units that are currently available. I ripped out the speaker and mic out of the C4 Pro and put in an aftermarket Sena clamp kit/speaker/mic.

Schuberth has a modular with a peak as well:

Thanks for that. Sounds like I am 1cm difference to your head size, I measured at 58 cm so a M in Nexx helmets and then the jump to L in Schuberth. That also sounds about right too as my Nexx was slightly tight but wore in later. I don’t mind helmets a bit snug either.

I only use comms for music and the integrated comms for the Schuberth looked to be a bit of a bargain. I looked at the E1 but there’s a few reviews that aren’t happy with it regarding the peak vibrating and the visor not staying up at speed (I like to ride with the visor up and sun shade down for air quite a bit) and it’s based on the older C3 rather than the newer C4 pro. Hmm…decisions.

I also saw a Shoei Hornet ADV on a German site for about $630, which is pricey, but it seems to be a pretty solid all rounder just lacking a drop down inner visor and easily added comms.

I’m not a big fan of the large control units for comms sticking off the side of the helmet. I like the built in sleekness.
