16 and an '08 CBR125R

I've been looking around, into insurance and whatnot for a 2008 Honda CBR125R, the lowest I've gotten is roughly $3466/y with TD. Which is not all that bad, I can pay it, but I don't deem it worth it, considering I'd only be paying $1300 for the bike.

Anyone have any suggestions for companies that will insure for riders starting out driving?

Cheers.

That is actually a decent quote for you.....
If you get your M2 and wait a year it may come down to around $2,500ish until your about 21 (Or get you G and 5 years experience there).

The reason it is so much more than your bike is statistically you have a greater chance of getting into an accident were they will have to cover your medical and rehab bills, Its not just covering your bike.

Agreed, the broker also mentioned that after a year, it would essentially cut in half with a clean record.

What about putting under my dad's name? He's had his motorcycle license for 20 years with a clean record. Would that end up costing more, or less?

Either less (by committing insurance fraud) or basically the same.

If he is the primary rider, you would pay much less. If you write him down as the primary rider and he's not, that's fraud.

At that price to ride a 125, I would suggest just getting your m2 and sitting on the idea of purchasing a bike this year. As your agent suggested there are a few companies (jevco/intact, etc...)that offer significant rate drops if you have had your motorcycle license for over a year.

Having your father as the primary operator would significantly lower your premium.

It just comes down to if you want to take that risk and wondering "what if".

Personally I wouldn't but its your choice as its a pretty hefty consequence if you were to get into an accident.

What risk? I'm not planning on hiding any operators.

What you also need to think about is the primary rider needs to be insured, so you may be cheaper, but are you and the new primary rider combined cheaper.

If you insure it under your fathers name, guarantee it will be a heck of a lot cheaper. at 17 years old i bought a brand new 2008 cbr125, cost me $2000 a year with Jevco. My friend had a 250 insured with his dad and combined cost them $800 a year. Right now im paying $1800 a year for a 2011 ninja 650 with TD but thats because they see the 5 years of having my M and G

I remember being told there is no such thing as primary or secondary riders when it comes to motorcycles. They price according to the highest risk in the household. That's what I was told a few years ago.

As was I. This is apparently not the case.

The risk of misrepresentation being a secondary rider when you're really the primary.

jeesus, a riding lawn mower has more horsepower than that. It's not awkward if you take the deck off first. In all seriousness though, its not the bike, its the liability.
