'02 R6 vs newer models (carb vs FI)

Got an offer on my bike for an '02 R6 track bike and cash. Comes with everything and pretty much a second bike as well if I want it.

'02 R6 as I understand is carbureted... They moved over to Inj in 2003.

Anybody running or has run an '02?Should I hold off for a newer injected bike?

Thoughts...?
Thanks

Ill be running TMP for the most part. Maybe GB.

What's it got for suspension and brakes?

lol. When I was looking for a bike after my CBR 929 I looked at a few 01/02 R6 and all of the ads say "mint, awesome bike", when I went to see it "Oh yeah, kicks out of 2nd sometimes..."

I got a quote on getting it fixed, needless to say when I told people I would give them HALF of their asking price they weren't too impressed!!

Aren't 02 R6 with regular forks? Not that I know why inverted forks is better (weight?), but still... Obviously don't listen to me as I don't know anything about all this, but obviously---if the price is right (the cash you're getting), then don't see why not. You were looking for a bike you'll feel OK to crash anyway.

Ohlins top mount steering dampner
Ohlins rear shock
Racetech Goldvalve front fork kit for 200lbs
Rear sets
NCR engine covers
steel braided lines
all combinations of 520 sprockets (front/rear)
Body Armour Race bodywork
front fork and steering stem and rear stand.
EBC break pads

Now, extras included, depending on what we do are a complete second bike, thought this is not built.
Three sets of forks, rims/rotors/bird cages/new cyclinder heads/radiators/subframes.
There is not a second of all race parts.
I have tire warmers and a Yamaha pit tent.

Sounds pretty tricked out. With that many forks hopefully he's swapped out the front end with inverted forks and radial brakes.

Motor rebuilt and has 250km on it.
Do you think they rebuilt the tranny at the same time? That year R6 is known for a weak 2nd gear.

Ill ask about 2nd gear.
And I'll ask about forks (inverted) too.

I'm going to bed. Keep it coming and thanks.
If you got a pic easy to see inverted forks and radial brakes :)

Nite nite sleep good and sweet track bike dreams.

And don't forget, 08+ R6 is a track MONSTER (especially with flashed ECU ;)).

That's got some nice stuff in it. Racetech internals on a conventional fork (non inverted) is awesome. There is nothing wrong with having a tricked out non-inverted fork.
I read some forums about second gear having some issues on popping out with some bikes that were abused or wheelied during 1st - 2nd gear shifts. It's all over R6 forums. Something to inquire about... other than that, looks like a good setup. Carb'd bikes run just fine.

I guess the real question would be how much you think something like this is worth? I'm not gonna say what I've offered so I don't sway any input.
He offered
1. just bike, tires Warmers, stands and pit tent as a pkg
and
2. bike, bike#2 of parts, all parts(tonnes of parts read above post plus more), Warmers, stands, tent etc etc.

You guys are making me feel better about it being carb'd. I've only ever had FI bikes.

It sounds like a pretty decent bike, especially with so many extra parts.

I have an 03 R6, first year of fuel injection. Complete redesign from the first gen.
My friend has the 05 R6, it's unofficially considered half a generation ahead because they did significant changes. Mainly inverted forks and bigger throttle bodies.

For the second gear issue on the first gen, if it has been addressed I wouldn't worry about it (most of the time people replace the transmission guts with 03-05 internals). Unfortunately its not all first gen R6's that suffer from the second gear issue so its a hit or miss if no one has done anything about it.

Compare how inverted forks look to standard and you can figure it out. Its not weight. 99% of riders would not notice a difference.

I guess I'm in the 99%. Because all I notice is that inverted forks put less weight on the front moving part and allow the wheel to be more responsive... Care to reveal the truth?

Inverted forks are a larger diameter at the top (where they clamp into the triple). This makes them "stiffer". (in a "flex" aspect, not rebound/compression). Rigid is probably the term I should use instead of "stiffer".

Sherrard did suspension.
Good mechanic rebuilt and tuned the engine.
No 2nd gear issues.

I should of said 99% of riders wouldnt notice a performance difference.
Skinnaird got it right
