Especially in that situtation, I wouldn't feel bad at all for not signalling until after passing the driveway. It's not like anyone exiting the parking lot can squeeze into the turning lane without infringing on the right (your) lane.

I've had similar happen to me as well in the past, so even though (I think) you're supposed to put your signal on a half block in advance of your turn, I wait until I pass the last driveway/entrance before my turn if there's any chance of someone thinking I'm turning earlier. Right or wrong...
