Pickup Trucks

Ugh, I wish they'd bring the smaller EV's here at least the ID.2 or 3. I like smaller cars/hatches and hate they are seeming being replaced with crossovers etc. I would like an electric I can easily afford, I don't like to break the bank on my cars.
Agreed. Unfortunately life circumstances have forced me to move to a larger vehicle.

The Maverick and Odyssey are large…but a large family requires it.

GTI / Volt / WRX / Si were awesome…but time to have something more functional.

But…I like it. Kids like it. And most importantly my wife likes it.

EV Maverick!? Sign me up!

Mind you if I could afford an F150L it would be in my driveway today.

Small EV…Mini Cooper and bolt come to mind. Both good. The Ford escape and Golf EV were turds with ridiculously low range (Cooper is also quite low in the winter at < 80km in very cold weather).

Just finding this out,

The ranger pick up shares its chassis and suspension and power plant with the amarok VW, although they are a TDI in Europe

I'm still (not so) patiently waiting for a Hybrid Ridgeline........I'll try to be the 1st to own one.
Oh that would be nice! Toyota has a great hybrid system in the Highlander and Sienna…not sure why Honda isn’t using their systems in the larger class.

Ranger with a TDI option would be sitting in my driveway. The VW platform share is a tease , cant get that VW in Canada , can’t get Ford to use a VW power unit . Meanwhile I’ll suffer along with my Tacoma ( which is a cult among owners ) . If you’re a closet computer tinkerer , shade tree mechanic and / or a parts collector, the Tacoma is the perfect truck .

Ram diesel pickup , if I could not find a B model Mack from the sixties or maybe a Soviet era Niva diesel that could be an option . It would need to come with a five yr warranty and It would be for sale month seventy . Nobody lately can F up a decent engine and power platform like those fellas at Dodge .

I found this very interesting... maybe unrealistic.

It looks cool. I assume all new EV companies are vaporware until proven different. There have probably been at least a dozen with an interesting press release that failed to launch. I was concerned about a 2026 launch with only renderings but it seems like there are at least a few physical prototypes. Others know better but I suspect going from prototype to full-scale production and sale in a year is a fantasy.

There's a reason you can no longer get a 2 wheel drive 4 cylinder 5-speed-manual standard cab Ford Ranger with no power windows or cruise control or carpet on the floor.

Despite the amount of online crowing about how there aren't any cheap vehicles on the market any more, that's mostly because people stopped buying them.

Also profit margin is far better on the fancy trims. Add a few hundred dollars in content, up the price by many thousands. A company that was aiming for the bottom end only doesn't need to worry about cannibalizing more profitable sales.

Now, by the time this thing is released, I expect it to be more than the Maverick at a lower comfort spec. That may be a tough sell. If they actually hit their price point, things look much different imo.

I want full size extended cab, power windows, locks, cruise A/C and keyless entry nothing else that's how my current truck is specced. If I could buy a replacement for 30 to 35 I would be all over it. Paid 24 for this one in 14 and it is close to 200k no problems at all so far. Probably end up driving this one into the ground at current prices I can do an engine and transmission and still be ahead.

Backed by Bezos apparently. That's a similar idea to one I've been thinking of - build a bare bones car that everyone can afford, but make it customizable/extensible so they don't have to keep selling and buying new ones.

In Canada, it was never the power windows, it was AC. If you wanted a base model, yes, it had manual windows, but no AC, and not an option. So you had to go up to the next thigher rim to get AC, which also came with power windows and locks, etc. And the cost was about the same as adding aftermarket AC, which wouldn't be covered under warranty, and I think at some point aftermarket shops stopped offering it so you had no choice but to go factory.

That part is very reasonable. I think of a car like the regal Toyota Echo - in Canada every single option you could get, other than colour, was dealer installed. Including the "RS" appearance package, Borla exhaust, and A/C. Now in this case they say they want to sell direct to consumers, so in theory there is no dealer to install them. I wonder what route they would go for service - sign an agreement with an existing manufacturer? Open up to independents being "licensed" service centers?

Those strippers were likely sold in fleet sales guessing the purchasing agents were offered some heavy discounts on more optioned units and that coupled with dealers only bringing in the no option rides on special order by a customer killed the market.

Crank windows inevitably mean there's an option for power windows. Means the mechanism inside the door is different, and the door trim panel is different between the two. Means you need to tool up for two different door designs. Means either the wiring harness is different or (usually) it's designed to accommodate every variation, so the wiring is there even if not used.

Or ... you make them all the same. Either nobody gets power windows (wasn't an option on a 1984 VW Golf) or everyone gets power windows (on any VW Golf built in the last 20+ years).

(Crank windows wouldn't bother me)

I love it and would be very happy if it shows up on our market. Unfortunately I don't think it'll meet all the specs / price levels because we know how things go.

The Maverick started out as a 'cheap and affordable' truck...in it's first year of release. Each year Ford kept cranking the price little by little and the 'cheap and affordable' part of it disappeared.

I bought my used 2023 for 36k. The car specced the same way today would be about 45k or so + + + . Add the new hybrid options and all of a sudden that cheap and affordable truck becomes 50k or so.

Now...if you want bare bare bones you're looking at 37k or so for the lowest trim, not including tax and delivery. That's not 'cheap and affordable' to the masses.

But...people are paying for it. And have shown that the price doesn't really matter. The Maverick was a grand slam for Ford and they couldn't keep up with deliveries with people waiting up to 14-15 months for a specific spec truck from the order books.

I'll tell buddy. He didn't want the diesel or short box but needed the heavy duty. It's only $140K so grab something before the insurance company reneges on paying for it.
