Because "pure motorcycling is at his fingertips"?Why do you need or want this?
He has an A8. ~2016. Maxed out at 9. Not sure what version he is (was?) running.Yep, your phone is running too old of a version of Android.
Are you using a really, really old phone...or have you just not updated the one you have?

I'll go phone shopping next week. B will try to talk me into an iPhone. NO WAY!

The only devices I have had that became garbage due to lack of OS updates were Apple. He can pick up a decent new android for $200. What's the cheapest iPhone? $1000? Does it last five times as long? Does it do anything better? To each their own but imo apple can be better if you are all in on their ecosystem (watch, airpods, etc). If you are like most people and mix and match, apple has no advantage imo. What exactly is your dislike?
If you were using an iPhone to play devils advocate, you probably wouldn’t be having these problems as iPhones are eligible for software updates to the current version for phones up to eight years of age, and security updates sometimes longer than that.
Considering most apps will not automatically cease working on older versions of the software for at least 3–4 years after that, you wouldn’t need a new phone at all yet in this scenario.
To each their own, however there is very clear advantages when it comes to software and security updates.
Rick I think I have an iPhone 12 lying around. It's yours for lunch sometime if you want it. PM me.What GG said.

Thanks for the offer. B has several Apple devices. They drive me nuts.Rick I think I have an iPhone 12 lying around. It's yours for lunch sometime if you want it. PM me.

The $200 android phones are not what you expect. They one Steve linked is pretty damned good. Not the best camera in the world but it's a decent brand new phone for $200. I think you haven't tried one in too long and have gross misconceptions. The $100 ones are pretty crap with 32GB, the $200 ones are competent with 128gb and should easily last for years.Sure, you can get cheap android phones through Walmart for under $100 for that mattery. But comparing a $100 or $200 android phone against anything Apple has made in the last few years is hardly a fair comparison, you get what you pay for with dirt cheap android phones. Processor, camera, build quality, etc. You're also going to get little to no software updates on a dirt cheap android phone (maybe a year or two at most in many cases, some none at all), not even critical security updates a lot of the time.
And you don't need to buy new as was mentioned - you can pickup 1 year old refurbs for much less. And yes, a 1 year old iPhone is going to have a drastically longer longevity than a $200 android.
I'm just trying to provide facts, the hate Apple gets seems rooted in tribalism vs facts for many, I don't get it. The same happens in the Apple world against Android, and again, I don't get it.
Use whatever floats your boat in the end, just compare 1:1 to avoid the sensationalistic price comparisons - trying to make a $1000 iphone a big deal somehow completely ignores the fact that a lot of good high end Android handsets sell for north of $2000 now.
Best buy screenshot of prices right now on their website for example:

Which is actually more expensive vs the highest end iPhones right now with similar specs, build qualities, cameras, and capabilities.

So lets be real.
What device did you own that suffered from lack of updates? Genuinely curious.
