Budget Vacation

If flights extend outside North America, I'd be heading to Turkiye or Japan to make the most of some very favourable exchange rates. Istanbul is easily one of the most historically important cities in the world with incredible food and sights, and Japan is, well, Japan. Nothing else like it. Was just talking to a buddy whose wife is Japanese, and they just got back from a month there. He said things were so cheap it was hard to comprehend, especially restaurants.
I found the food very reasonable in most places. Famous ramen shops with lines out front - nice big bowl $10-$12. Come back home, anything half decent no less than $20 for a bowl.

I have been going to different Thai restaraunts around Toronto lately, testing how well my 5 months of studying Thai language is going. Getting the same dish I can get in Thailand for literally $2-2.50 costs me $23-$24 here with tip. Ouch. I tell them all in Thai too expensive! 😭

Go to Nicaragua. You’ll live like a king on $CDN. You can rent a villa with a pool in the centre of Grenada for the same price you’d pay for a motel in Ontario. Food is cheap, booze is cheap, weather is hot.

I'm thinking 'budget vacation' is not the proper title for this thread anymore
Fair point, but when the flight isn't a factor in the cost, the math changes considerably. Thailand, as mentioned by @Mikedezo44 above, is super cheap once you get there. Most of the cost in in getting there and back.

Add that traveling in Canada has become crazy expensive. Maritimes, BC, the Rockies, they're all wildly pricey once you arrive. Even camping has gotten relatively expensive when you add the cost of gas and park fees. Add a trailer, either to buy or rent, and it gets even worse...

We have wanted to go to Thailand or Vietnam for the longest time but to do it justice would require 10 days + with the long flights. We just don’t have that time off. Hard enough to get a free week.

I was thinking New Orleans, never been there before.

Being by the water is a must for the wife.
You can stay in the French Quarter in a vintage hotel for $90CAD a night! Stupid cheap.

Lookup Andrew Jackson Hotel French Quarter, I used to stay there a few times a year. It’s in the French Quarter, short walk to the river, tons of zydeco and blues bars, river cruises.

Yeah, it's about 20 hours to Bangkok vs less than 10 to Europe or further east. Definitely best to have at least two weeks there to shrug off potential jet lag. That said, when I went ages ago, I didn't have any jet lag going. Coming back, though, was absolutely brutal. I didn't sleep right for two weeks.

It's almost worth it regardless, though. You'll never think of food (and what it should cost!) the same way again. My own obsessions and biases keep Italian Italian food (as opposed to American Italian) firmly at the top, but Southeast Asian is definitely in second. I was also enamoured of Thai culture, which as much as anywhere I've been balances warm friendliness with politeness just about perfectly. That said, we were almost exclusively in the north, which wasn't as heavily touristed at that time, and I've been told some of the innocence has since been lost. I'm sure @Evoex has more recent experiences, though...

saying 141 a night from sept 3 to the 9th

Oaxaca City. I stayed a week back in February and it is a really nice place. A ton of places have signs or speak English, so language will not be an issue most of the time.

Food is amazing, and if you like Mezcal this is the place to be.

I was going to suggest a cruise out of New Jersey, but I see you have a cruise lined up already. We just got back from a 5-day on Royal Caribbean out of New Jersey for a family reunion.
How was it? What ports did you stop at?

I've only been on one cruise before, so my experience is limited. I had a great time with 50 family members (from my wife's side) I haven't seen since 2018, so the ship was really more of a "meeting place".

Here we are leaving New Jersey going under the Verrazzano bridge. When you're on the ship, it looks like there might not be enough clearance. I had to bite my tongue so as not to make any Baltimore bridge jokes.

Our ship was Liberty of the Seas, which is older and it showed in some ways, but the staff was amazing. I agreed with some of the passengers who said the food wasn't up to par (even on the same ship on previous sailings), but still mostly OK. We ate in the main dining room every night and for half of the breakfasts, with the other half at the buffet as well as lunches. I'd rate the food as adequate, but I expect more from a cruise. Occasionally there were some dishes that were amazing - the beef tenderloin, Carne Asada, and Jerk pork chop come to mind. There was also a pizzeria that stayed open until 3am, which was better than average. It was located in a promenade on Deck 5 with a bunch of other shops, bars, and eateries. We had an inside cabin on Deck 8 with a window overlooking it all.

Bermuda was the only port, but we were there for 2 days. It was beautiful, but expensive as is to be expected of any place that has no exports whatsoever and relies solely on tourism. My young adult kids raved about the fish and chips and fish sandwiches at a restaurant by the dock called Anchor, but for USD$30 a plate, they should have been amazing. The waters were rougher than the Caribbean cruise I went on previously on a similarly sized ship, but I heard it was typically for this route and being windier than usual also contributed.

The on-board entertainment was hit and miss. The comedian was a flop on his first show which was a family audience, and marginally better when he was allowed to let loose on the adults. The juggler was good. The ship had a small ice rink on which they did a show which was OK. They also had a theater and did a musical of "Saturday Night Fever" which was really good (it helped that I never watched the whole movie from start to finish). They also did some game shows in the theater which were hilarious to the audience and probably mortifying to the contestants. I didn't get much time to spend in the bars for the live one-man bands, but the Karaoke bar was packed on the last night and there were some pretty good performances. Somebody named Albert signed up for Journey's "Don't Sop Believing", but must have chickened out at the last minute as a no-show, so one of my nieces ran up on stage yelling "I'm Albert" and brought the house down with the entire audience singing along. At the end, everyone was chanting "Albert! Albert! Albert!".

We booked in September for July, so we didn't get the best pricing. Cost was USD$1100 each for my wife and me including gratuities. We also bought drink packages for $100 and $400, but we didn't even break even, so next time we'll probably just pay a la carte. We did 2 excursions through Royal for about $100 per person - a 6-hour island bus tour on day 1 and a boat tour with snorkeling on day 2. I liked the convenience of being able to drive to the port in 8 hours, so will be keeping an eye on last minute deals for the future. I also realized there are cruises from Quebec and Nova Scotia, which I'll also be looking into.

I’ve been on liberty of the seas , it is older but if can’t find something to do on that ship there is no helping you . It’s American indulgence on a next level . I’d go back . We did a Caribbean lap .

If flights are not part of budget; I went to Greece late May. It’s accommodating to lower budgets, other than the guided towers of Acropolis which are too expensive. ( But actual site visit is €25/person. )
I booked for 4 nights through booking.com an apartment that averaged $100/ Canadian a night in Athens.
And in Santorini got lucked out with -about $85 cnd per night.

However the prices do flactuate with dates so can’t recommend anything but searching.

food is cheaper compared to eating out here, about €10-12/main which includes tax and generally no tipping.
Bus is cheap to get around with passes.

Uber is very expensive if you want to use it, I didn’t.

I thought it was a great value compare to vacationing in Canada! $200 can get you accommodation and food for 2 people depending on your diet, but won’t cover bus tours and such. It’s big enough country that some research will stretch the dollar.

Any ideas for some day trips with the family.
We are not going to Newfoundland as planned so we need to entertain the 14 and 10 year old locally.

Cheltenham badlands may be interesting for a visit. It may be closed though.

Wonderland day passes are $43 at costco. Does hamilton still have a waterpark? Wild water kingdom still exists too I think.

Lots of beaches or conservation areas around for lounging/hiking. Somewhere like mono cliffs gives you lots of elevation and nice lookouts or you can hit up some of the hamilton waterfalls (many now require reservations).

Wife and I went tubing in Elora gorge last week. Only slightly above a lazy river at this point of the year. About $60 a person. Tube ride down takes about 35 minutes then a 35 minute 2.3km walk up. Repeat as many times as you want. Some raspberries on the path for a snack on the way back. Prebooking required. Show up early. Line to sign waiver is often an hour. Stupid Conservation Authority with zero incentive to improve.

I don't know price or if last minute is available but I know a bunch of people that visit sherkston shores and love it. Like a florida community where everyone drives around in golf carts. Not for a day trip but a night or two there could feel vacationy.

Great ideas. I will consult with the manager.

Sherkston is out for sure as my parents have a trailer on Lake Huron.

Will try to do Wonderland and maybe a Jays game.

There is some grey wolf lodge near Niagara, which seems popular for family's with kids, indoor water park, I think there is a outdoor tree climbing thing near there as well.

If you want to cross the boarder Six Flags Darien lake might be of interest

Wonderland, Blue mountain, The Zoo, Ripley's Aquarium, Niagara Falls
Usually mini amusement parks will start popping up in the weeks leading up to The Ex (at least in To)
