Cheap GPS device @ Canadian Tire, may be great for warm weather rides.

I've mirrored the Canada-only setup for the time being: iGO Canada complete.rar (right-click and save-as). Vlad or OP, or anyone, feel free to cross-post this link in any earlier posts to help people find it. Huge props to Vlad and the rest of you nerds for getting this going (I use 'nerds' in the most complimentary fashion possible ;) ).

Anyone else having issue with it dropping GPS signal?
All of a sudden "GPS Signal lost"
No tunnels or bridges nearby.
Then it needs a hard reset to get the signal to come back.

BTW please post up that Icon mod!!
:D

Actually I have a completed hack, with a single install link that changes the registry and install the start menu items, with a bunch of utilities, media players, games, and also comes with an uninstall executable as well to revert everything back.

And of course the iGO 8 with everything works, tons of skins, and about 15+ motorcycle pictures to choose from :D

just need a place to host them.

TTS? POI? icons for POI?
maps? etc etc?
This sounds gooood!
:D
How much space does it take up?

I'm trying to find a way to set up an FTP user with read-only privileges, but so far my server does not allow it. I'll have to contact provider's tech support and that might take a while. Letting everyone in with read/write access did not work and I got tired of re-uploading stuff people messed up. Space is not an issue and bandwidth was not a problem so far either - it's just the rights I have to figure out. Stay tuned.

Vlad, why not just zip each folder and post links to the files, like I did with Canada-only iGo? That would mean people will have to get the whole zip at once, but it's better than nothing (actually, might be better since you can then use download managers).

Or we can start a torrent with any/all versions and add-ons; this will allow people to download things quicker, solve the potential space/bandwidth problem, and allow people to download only the files they need. FTP is not necessary for a one-time download like this.

It's because I'm a little stubborn and set in my ways, but also because my ways work the best :). I want to allow people to download whole packages, but also individual files. I want to keep the access limited (hence the ID/password) and have no intent to run a world-wide download service. I want to be able to update the contents as easily as possible without having to change links or web pages all the time. Those and other things are much easier to accomplish using FTP than anything else, at least for me.

It's not a bad idea, but you'll have to implement it without my direct involvement. I'll be happy to provide all the files I have for other people to seed.

I'm still squeezing the host's poor tech support to provide me usable instructions on how to set the permissions properly. I'll let everyone know if/when I come up with a solution. We cannot go back to free-for-all though, it's just not robust enough.

Finally figured out this torrent thing :D

Here is the link

it contains the installation/uninstallation files plus iGO 8 with everything work as far as i know, and includes all the icons in the world to choose from, plus tons of skins to pick.

http://www.myminimp3.com/SDMMC.torrent

Just unzip the file copy everything to the root of the SD card as it is. and go to the install folder and choose INSTALL :) the unit will ask to be restarted, and it will make any modifications required to the registry on it is on. And if you don't like then go to the uninstall directory, and it will switch everything back to factory settings.

Cheers,

Nas

Masalma... Problem now is that almost anyone that bought that GPS unit already have all the software. Not many people are going to download this and seed it.

Since this is a torrent... you shouldn't of RARed the files. People like to see what they download especially since it's 1.5 gigs. Also if it's not RARed then people can pick and chose the files they want (ie: just the US POI and maps)

Other then that, thanks for doing this. This is the fastest torrent download I've had in a long time. I don't know why, but I'm downloading at over 300KB/s on a throttled connection. All other torrent combined never go over 30KB/s at this time of day.

Noted :)

That was my first ever Torrent creation thing, and I used http://www.vipeers.com/ but will upload the directory that seems like a better idea :) Thanx

Thanks Nas! As Splash said, it's downloading with unbelievable speed!

I'm still fighting with my host to figure out the FTP access permissions (10 messages and counting), but as soon as I get that fixed this packet will be up there with the rest of the goodies. In the mean time I'll keep seeding it as much as possible.

Vlad, awesome work! Thank you!

I don't own Curtis, instead I have Windows CE core 5.0 - based ViaMichelin unit.
It works very well on my bike, but that MioPocket sounds tempting.

If I hack my ViaMichelin, will I loose Bluetooth functionality? (I know it's a bit of-topic, sorry)

You are welcome, in the name of all people that contributed and are continuing to contribute to this colaborative effort.

CE is CE, so you should have no problems using most of the tricks and programs we are discussing here.

If navigation is your primary use Mip Pocket is an overkill and too cumbersome, IMO. A good menu system or even well organized Windows desktop would be better. However, there's no harm in trying anything out, as long as you are sure you can revert to previous functional state, so backup and test the restore first.

I'd say it's about 50/50 chance. If the software you replace the original with has Bluetooth support than you'll probably still have it. Think of it as just a small PC - hardware is useless without software support and that support can be built into the operating system or provided by additional software, drivers, add-ons etc. Change the OS and you are in uncharted territory...

anybody try this skin? Look cool... I'll give it a shot when I have time

http://www.igo8mods.com/dimka.htm

I'm using that skin (don't remember which version) and it's great. Even opens up options I don't remember on the default iGo skin. I'd recommend it above all others but it does have some tiny icons to push on our small screen and if you don't like extraneous functionality it may confuse non tech people.

I finally managed to squeeze a simple answer out of my host's tech support. It appears that what I want to do (assign read-only permissions to a user ID) is not possible. F&^$%$ Linux hosting, go figure. Anyway, I'll reactivate the guest FTP account (the password will be updated in post 88 , but can no longer guarantee the integrity or completeness of data there. I'll try to keep it in order, but it will ultimately depend on how much other people (ab)use it.

The upside of full access is that those that have something worth sharing can upload it them self. I just ask you to create your own folders, use descriptive names for them and don't change anything else there.

That doesn't sound right. On my 20 bucks a year account it can be done. It runs on Unix I believe, not Linux though. But still cannot believe that such a fundamental request cannot be accommodated by the system.

EDIT: Actually, I just looked into my cpanel and cannot see read/write option either. Oh well, I guess not everything is possible in 2009 ... :-(
