Cheap GPS device @ Canadian Tire, may be great for warm weather rides.

here is a link to the original manufacturer it is just branded for curtis

Thanks. Specs are quite serious (dual core, SDHC support...), they just didn't mention that it's a 400MHz processor as I read somewhere else. Damn, it has the same memory and eight times the speed of the network server I used to administer :)

Haha thanks Vlad, I opened mine too.
I think we could mod it with any slim cell phone battery by soldering it on to ends of the connector.

That's what I was thinking, exactly :).

Wonder if we could sort of weather proof this too.. silicone inside all the seams maybe?

I was thinking about it too, but it won't be an easy task. There's too many openings on the case that would need to be sealed (USB, earphone, SD, on/off button, speakers, pen, did I miss any?). There's also a question of condensation and pressure equalization - we'd have to let it vent somehow like other waterproof units do.

On the other hand, adding silicone as a damper can make it more vibration resistant. It took my Bandit about 50,000Km to shake to death a Garmin in a RAM mount, I don't dare imagine what it would do to this poor thing.

Maybe a protective semi-permanent cover might be a better idea...

That's what Ziploc sandwich bags are for :)

I would just put it in the map pocket of a tank bag. Easy to see and protected from the elements and vibration to some extent.

Better than nothing, but tends to fall apart at speed and looks ugly to boot.

The best recommendation so far. A proper handlebar / triple clamp mount, if there was a custom one for this unit, would cost almost as much as a decent tank bag. I'm also sure a tank bag filled with the usual stuff or even empty would shield the unit from vibration very effectively. Damn, now I'll have to buy a tank bag in addition to 3 hard cases I already have :). After this experience my Garmin feels so stone age...

Yeah this has turned out to be a nice project.
Now this GPS rocks! Altho still havent gotten the TTS street name voice to work, yet.
Thanks Vlad for use of FTP and help.
Also thank you to Masalma.

We should keep up the POI for speed traps however.....would be nice exchange.

Our SDHC cards just arrived.. Now I'll have to read through the last 100 posts or so to see what's the most current (and easiest way) to get iGO with all the maps up and runnin.

No need for that. Just download instructions from the FTP.

Awesome, thank you.
:D

If you looking for Points of interest to load on your new GPS, check out http://poifriend.com/ . It contains a nice collection. I've already loaded all the motorcycle dealerships and Tim's locations onto my GPS :)

I would also recommend the speedcamera database recommended by Splash. it contains the known speed trap spots and the unit will warn you as you approach them.

That's one of the nicest things I've ever heard you say!!....LOL...:D:D Be proud Vlad....be very proud!! :D:D

I am :D. I'll take this opportunity to acknowledge all the thanks we received and will receive. Personally, I would do pretty much the same anyway, but kudos are nevertheless stimulating :). Please note that without ideas, hints, pointers and direct collaboration from several other people (I don't want to name them in fear that I would be missing someone, but we all know who they are) that FTP would be missing a lot of useful stuff.

Thanks, Vlad. I'll get to it. I guess I'll also have to fire up the XP box and install Active Sync on it. I hope it'll get easier to transfer data between the unit and my ubuntu box when iGO gets installed, since that's where I do all of my gis/rs work.

Useful links collected here are added to \howto\Web resources.txt. I've just started to populate it, so let me know if anything is missing.

Trying t figure these POI out.. Its either a txt file or a kml file I end up with.... no idea how to load them onto gps

this might be kinda of a distraction but instead of mounting the unit on your bike..set your route, connect headphones, put it on your pocket, and let the tts tell you where to go..just use 1 side of the head phones and leave you other ears open for the rest of the worls..

I don't think you need ActiveSync if you are just going to replace the built-in navigator with iGO. Change the shell.ini to point to iGO and you are good to GO :)

POI info

when you download a POI file with the .KML extension, you need to place this file in the content\userdata\poi\ folder in order for IGO8 to recognize it.

You will need to create this folder as it does not exist.

BBmenu001.zip - replacement for the default menu

and

Europe_NASADem.zip - Digital Elevation Model

added.

Anyone figure out how to change the little arrow into a motorcycle? :)

Thanks dyno! worked perfectly
