Cheap GPS device @ Canadian Tire, may be great for warm weather rides.

figured out what was wrong: was using an outdated version of WinRAR, so I've extracted all files now, and it's running beatifully.

HOWEVER, if I want to use the original Curtis Menu screen and have iGO8 launch when I select Navigate, I need to modify the Shell.ini file, right? Where is the file, and will this work if I've taken the easy crack route and downloaded Masalma's crack file?

Yes, you need to change the shell.ini to point to iGO if you want it to launch when you select Navigate. Not sure about how the easy crack works so I can't say for sure, but changing the shell.ini to launch iGO should work.

Masalma?

and for the Mio Shell, which files do I have to copy over to the SD and do I have to rename them?

For the mio shell, there is an abbreviated set of instructions on Vlad's FTP that tell you what files to copy, but I didn't bother to rename the ones it said. I had the shell.ini hack defaulting the navigate button to explorer so I just ran the mio autorun file and let it install. Worked like a charm on the 2 units that I bought.

After you copy those files into the iGO directory and say yes to over-writing the files, then you will need to go into the settings to select the voice that you want...

Once iGO is loaded up, go to settings, regional settings, then voice options... select one of the tts options.

I copied those files over and got no "confirm overwrite"...and TTS Kate does not work. :(

It didn't work for me the first time either mxs... the first time I just tried extracting it straight from winrar into iGO8...

The time that it worked for me I extracted the 'kate' files first, then cut and pasted them into the iGO8 directory saying yes to over-write... it worked for me the 2nd time.

I would upload what I have, but I don't have anywhere to upload it to.

Don't worry about it. I got it working (but not by just dropping the archive's content into iGO8; that would never work ...). Now, I don't even how and I don't care. One of those things when you re-install everything 3 times and it finally works. It is Windows based, so not surprise there ... LOL

I am a huge fan of garmin GPS, how does the mobile one compare? and how does iGO8 compare with the mobile version of garmin?

I can only compare this unit with Garmin E-Trex Vista HcX. Let me just put it this way: If Curtis was as vibration and water proof as Garmin, the former woild be demoted to hiking/bicycle duty only. It is somewhat comparing apples and oranges, but navigation wise the combination Curtis/iGO8 is unbeatable. For a better comparison we should be running Garmin software on the Curtis, but I haven't go to tackle that yet. Does anyone know how/what to use to run Garmin on Curtis?

I haven't checked the track logging on the Curtis yet. It's quality anc compatibility is important to me because I use GPS logs to geotag all my photos, map routes on Google maps / EveryTrail, etc.

I have added the !What is here.txt to the FTP site. It's purpose should be self-evident :)

BTW, does anyone have European maps for iGO? Anyone with Garmin software or instructions on where to find it? ;)

Good luck... it's not as easy as iGO.

BTW.. I'm going from a Garmin legend HC (almost the same as the Vista HCX) and you're right... There's no comparison. I love my garmin for somethings but this iGO will be my main GPS for the truck now.

Picked one up for myself. After all the practice I got hacking my buddies, it made it simple to do my own. Thanks Masalma & Vlad for all the help.

Are these GPS still on sale at CT?

I almost didn't download the DEM. I thought everybody used contours like Garmin in Topo Canada. Originally I figured it was something related to Vlad's work lol

You have successfully hacked it. From there you need to either browse to the iGO software and run it, or modify the shell.ini to launch it automatically. You can also install the Mio software which will then launch itself automatically and you can run iGO from there.

thanks
i am reading about the miopocket install and it is very confusing which model do i have??
are they referrring to the gps unit or something else

I am new at this and all help would be appreciated

Don't forget to thank Vlad for hosting the files, in addition to the other 2 gentlemen.

I found Garmin easy to do. I have it on my touch, and it can't be beat, especially with garmin online.
