I was lucky to get my hands on the latest helmet from Shoei the RF-1400. The RF-1400 is the successor of the highly regarded RF-1200. I give my thoughts, first impressions, and review of what might be the best everyday street riding helmet in 2021. I am damn in love with this Basalt Grey

why not put this under reviews or multimedia?

Nice helmet. I'm a fan of Shoei, but I love the convenience of my C4. You can't beat modular for convenience. I suppose if you're a weekend GP track rider the old fashioned head coffin is the safest though.

3.6lbs? yikes.

I'll probably spring for a modular just to make my life easier for motorcycle instruction but i'm not carrying that weight riding all day!

Big fan of Shoei my current RF1200 is getting close to being retired date wise for racing, so I will be shopping for a RF1400.

I'll never understand how ppl can ride the street without ear plugs though.

Majority of my friends don't and they look at me like I am some old man. I know better to protect my hearing as I have already lost some of it due to a lightning strike a decade ago.

LOL. I recall a time when 5-7lbs was normal for a helmet. In fact, I visited an old friend a few years ago who still wears his trusty old fibreglass 1979 Bell FF. I couldn't believe how heavy it was, felt like 10lbs. I guess 4lbs doesn't bother me, but then I ride my Harley with a half-helmet in July and the C4 is only for my daily commute.

Shoei look like nice helmets but my only beef with them is that I can't get one to fit my head. There is always pressure on my forehead and the back. The only helmet I've been able to find that fits is the Arai Signet-X as it has that long oval shape.

I guess I got all the Irish/Ulster-Scots genes in my family and nothing from my First Nations side... LOL

My current street helmet was manufactured in 2015 so I'm in the market for a replacement and tried the 1400 but its looking more and more like another Signet at this stage.

Does anyone else have a long oval head? What are you wearing?

I've jammed my head into Shoeis for years but they never really fit properly for a narrow head. At least not the models I owned: TZR, RF1000 and GT-Air. I really like the build quality, but I had to modify the foam on all of them to mitigate the forehead hotspot.

The 2016+ Bell Star is the only helmet that has actually fit my head comfortably. The build quality of the standard Star models is not quite up to Shoei or Arai standards, but they're cheaper and still a really good helmet. The current models are all on closeout because of the switch to Snell 2020 so you might be able to find something in your size for really cheap. I really hope that they don't mess with the internal shape for the Snell 2020 model because then I think my only option would be a Signet-X, and there are a bunch of things I don't like about Arai's visors.

FYI, this is a useful resource for seeing if a helmet model is in the right ballpark for your head shape:

But it's just to get into the right ballpark - I own both the Bell Star and the HJC RPHA 70 ST, and they don't fit the same at all despite being the same magnitude on the "more oval" axis. I've had to do the foam modifications to the 70 ST and it still isn't nearly as comfortable as the Star

Ditto. I'm still using an Arai Profile, and a Signet - Q (both are long oval). At 10 yrs old, the Q is my "new" lid.
When Cycle World auctioned everything off, I bought 2 Shoei helmets. Fit was good, for 2 minutes. I had to sell them.
Try wearing a Bell for fitment. I slipped a couple Bell helmets on thie yr. Fit was very decent.....for the 5 - 10 minutes. No hot spots. I'll likely buy one soon.
