Royal Enfield

It's actually quite easy to check a weld process, you built one and then you cut it in half, polish the cross-section, then you stick it under about an 60 thousand dollar metallographic microscope to see how deep your weld went and how many flaws are in the finished product :geek:
it's called destructive testing and all the best manufacturers do it. Show me that and I'm sold.

i was a certified welder by trade with a 6 position ticket, lot's of testing needs to happen

Do your lungs set off the metal detectors at the airport?

Or maul it with a 5lb hammer - if it breaks the weld is no good.

That might work,
but they put absolutely no lateral triangulation in the frame where it meets the steering head, they built a big bicycle.

The bike is fuel injected, they can make the fuel tank any shape now, they need to google perimeter motorcycle frame.

Came across this today...never realized this much hands on work was required as part of the manufacturing process!

Also, I lol'd at 5:15

What!?!
I thought for sure it would be a lot more automated lol

Didnt know the S1000 rr used an inline 6 - correction - that was probably some other engine they edited in there.

yeah it shows assembly of a few models

BTW, Royal Enfield no longer hand paints their tanks. It's now automated and/or stickers according to a dealer I talked to. Kind of a nice thing to say you have a hand painted tank IMO.

that's a shame, some real artisans
nicer then a sticker under clear coat

I wonder if they used to tack (cloth) the tank again once the pinstriping paint dried.
Would be horrible if they got fisheyes after applying the clearcoat, otherwise!

I think that was only for the older 350 and 500 singles, they had like 2 people that did all the tanks.
Ramping up production with all the newer models likely doesn't allow for such niceties.

As someone who has done enough automotive painting, I can tell you one of the easiest ways to get fish-eye is to use a tack cloth. They're good to remove dust, but you have to wipe with alcohol after you use them. I never really looked at the RE paint jobs closely enough to see if they're clear coated, but I suspect not. I suggest they're using an acrylic or urethane enamel with activator. Automotive paint is very toxic, especially when sprayed. Almost all auto makers changed to automated painting long ago and they use water-based paints instead of oil-based urethanes now, both for safety reasons and production.

I have nothing but respect for the guys in that vid who stand there all day painting flawless fuel tanks. They're part of a disappearing bunch of craftsmen who in my eyes deserve a lot of credit.

Where did you order yours from?
When I was in touch with Yamaha Oakville they told me it was approximately CAD$ 8500 + tax with a four month waiting time as they are shipped from India.

Does that sound about right?

There's a dealer in Acton and Lakefield. Go to the RE website and it will redirect. The dealer in Lakefield had some in stock last time I contacted them.

Is that the same guy that sells Ural sidecar rigs?
