Keep your eyes open

Just a friendly warning to keep your eyes open at dusk. A friend just told me she witnessed a motorcycle collision with a deer on the 401 near Gananoque the other night. Seems the rider might be ok but he didn’t have too much of a chance as the deer vaulted the median apparently and landed on his front tire. Apparently this stretch of highway near highway 32 is teeming with deer but there’s probably other stretches too. I always felt pretty safe on the 400 series and only really worried about backroads but I’ll be more vigilant now.

I've already seen them 2 or 3 times in the middle of the day too. First time there were 3 that crossed Mono Adjala Townline (road that goes S. of the Hockley General Store and ends at Hwy 9).

I'm not sure if wildlife is just heading out of the woods more due to us humans being locked up at home the last few months but I've never seen deer wandering across the road during the day.

I've seen them in Halliburton around 3pm on the outskirts of town just chilling by the side of the road but those are smaller roads and I’m generally careful on those anyway if there’s woods nearby. This accident (Gan) happened around 8pm.

Deer whistles work
Then there's the "jack lighting"
When a deer, or other critter, sees the headlight, it will stand and stare at it, not realizing there is a dangerous HUMAN attached to it.
So when you crest a hill, or on a long flat stretch FLASH your high beams on and off a couple of times. The change in the light will scare the critter and it will run away.

Yep
Actually anything that makes a noise the animal doesn't recognize.
A siren, bell , gong, a Cyndi Lauper tune will work... BUT the animal has to hear it.

One little deer whistle may not cut it, try ten

People have been feeding the Fox up our way, now they just stand in front of your vehicle and wait for you to stop or go around.
That can't end well for the fox.

Something to keep in mind; the Deer will do absolutely everything in his power not to hit you,
if you are doing the same you guys probably won't collide ;)

be very careful riding along a river or stream at dusk or dawn ...they are after water and one will cross ....then .....

Yeah critters are fast ...just get hard on the binders and let the critter do its thing....most times you miss...sometimes .... :(
and FFS don't do the " I had to lay the bike down ....yada yada " ....there is a youtube around where the deer clearly did not touch the guy or the bike and he lowsides it on purpose....sigh.

10 is apparently only 80 dB. Useless. Completely blended in with background car noise. Also, to be effective, you want a frequency around 3K. You can hear that well too (and it's super annoying). If your deer whistle isnt annoying you so much you want to drive in to a tree, it's doing nothing for the deer either.

So far the highest risk wildlife I've found riding on hot summer days, is of the female human variety, wearing short shorts, tight skirts, and body parts all out, keeping eyes on the road, is challenging. When I used to commute downtown, I'm not sure if going braless is becoming a fad, though, I almost had to do the lay her down move multiple times

Speaking of that, what happened to that commuting thread? Guy on a cruiser and what he saw that was interesting each day.

Yeah I was just thinking about that the other day, maybe they don't commute anymore because of COVID..

I almost T-boned a cow on a motocrosser in 1977 couldn't swerve because I was in mid air! That was exciting ? mooooooove!
Taught me that it's probably not wise to go airborne over blind hills, even if you know the road real well.
