Been thinking about a Harley...

If it's what you want to ride, go on a demo day, or rent one for a day. You will have 1 of 4 reactions: love it, hate it, indifference.

Yes the motorcycle comes with a dose of lifestyle, right from the dealer on down to the owners: https://rideapart.com/articles/how-to-sell-a-harley-davidson

I've been on a Davidson 3 times, demo day, rented one for a day, and rode a friends.

Would I own one? Ehhhh maybe some day, as a second bike, for going slow, a ride that my wife would hop on the back of. She felt safe on the back of the Road King.

Good point. For the purpose of bringing a pillion in comfort, it's possibly worth having; though I'd personally go with something from that Bavarian brand

Pirates are not losers dude. They ran the Caribbean for decades and got rich doing it. You can be yourself too, but that might be kind of boring. Why be boring?

my earlier post where i said you couldnt be that much of a loser ?
you just proved me wrong

I read this three times. I thought no way does this mean what it says. No way! He's in on the joke.

You think he was serious? Sad but true?

Get what you want. If you want a Harley, go for it. Life is too short to obsess about what others think.

I agree. In this day and age, if someone is bikecurious about switching to the other team, who are we to judge.

The point we're making is they buy Harley because they obsess about what others think. It's the definition of a status symbol. That's why they call non-owners jealous.

inreb, I like you man, you speak your mind and I can dig that. I do agree that some people buy more into a fantasy when buying a HD and allow that fantasy to cloud their judgement and attitude towards other riders. I will also say that the this is the minority, the majority of people that buy a HD (or any other motorcycle) is that they like that brand, make, model etc. I also think that you can say the same thing for any product or brand that people get passionate about.

I will also say that I am not a "fan boy" of any motorcycle. I liked my Suzuki, I like my Honda and I'll like any future bike I purchase. I also see appealing things ( at least to me ) from Yamaha, Triumph, Ducatti, Moto Guzzi etc..
What I will say is changing is how I see myself riding now and in the near future.

I am not looking for justification to make any purchase, I earn my money and I'll spend it how I see fit. Will I buy a HD? not sure to be honest, will I buy a new motorcycle of any brand, not sure? Just a post on a forum to express my thoughts and feelings, I try to respect all of the replies no matter how stupid I think some them are (from both HD lovers and haters).

I also agree with you on the point that many riders make their bikes look just plain silly ( at least to me ) but hey, that is their choice and they have to ride it, I'm sure a few people laugh at me (grey hair and overweight) when I step off my Honda, But F them I ride what I have and I like it. But to condem another person due to what they like or enjoy is just plain foolish, no matter what side of the fence you're standing on.

If Joe Bass and I ever arrange the ride to DQ for hugs I'll be sure to PM you, I'm sure you and I will find our double rainbow :agave:

It's all very anecdotal to be fair; the locals around Inreb and myself are the above mentioned... "If it ain't HD, it ain't worth owning" "why you ride that Chinese ****?" etc etc are all very commonly heard, and very honestly speaking, though these types are not representative of all the local HD owners, they are the majority.

I bought a Buell as my second bike thinking I could be accepted by all; HD guys scoffed at me while sport bikers, metric cruisers, touring types etc all became friends with me regardless of weather or not they accepted what I rode a worth while. This is why the HD crowd gets the eyeroll reaction they often do.

@Jampy00, I'm old and grey and nowhere near as angry as I come across. At the end of the day it's all a big cackle to me and I enjoy finding new ways to insult people who are too stupid to be insulted. <--that was fun, see what I mean?
Also I'm old enough to have been there when the Japanese bike invasion started and to see the demise of the British m/c juggernaut. I've been listening to Wild Hogs bash on "Rice" and British bikes for decades. Now that they're bloated, angry and freakishly disproportioned it's time they get their just deserts:icescream:

Yep, I'm old and grey as well, or at least I feel that way when I wake up in the morning..

Listen, the simple fact is no matter what you do, there will be others out there that do not like it or want to tear you down for it. Instead of being just like them, dare to be different. I've run into thousands of idiots in my life, they used to really get under my skin and I would actually spend time trying to show them the light. Now I say F them and move on. So some HD guys like to spread the butthurt, after hearing the nonsense coming out of thiers mouths are these the people you really want to hang out with, I highly doubt it. But the same can be said of those who go out of their way to bash the HD riders as a whole. At the end of the day I have my sentimental value in HD, I miss my dad and when I see (or hear) a HD just for one split second I sometimes think it might be him. Yep, I'm a old softy. I could not give one rat's @ss about the HD fanboy or the beerbelly rebels, I know why I like what I like and in the end that is all that matters. So to anyone who still wants to debate what is better, go ahead you'll not diminish my fond memories.

I can totally understand where you are coming from. I've been riding dirt, than street for over 30 years, I've owned all the brands, Japanese, British, Italian, and ever since I have bought my Harley Road King Classic, the other bikes are starting to collect dust. When I hop on my sport bike now, it feels so odd. I think you can do no wrong with a any cruiser, HD or Metric. I believe it's the best type of bike for general street riding.

To the first highlight: that ship sailed a long time ago. Of course I'll talk to anyone any time but I know that he thinks he knows that I know who's top dog. Even the quiet ones, it just oozes out of their pores.

Second highlight: of course, absolutely. Have you seen the movie Electra Glide in Blue? Those are straight up Harleys before they went queer. Like my neighbours decker I mentioned earlier or the one in the Elvis pic. If you're older like me maybe your Dad was of 100% American Shovelhead, not 80% Asian content. Oops.

Third: I'm sorry that I glossed over your first post. I had no intention to do harm.

Anyway, I think that's a wrap. I'm surprised the mods haven't stepped in. Have a good one.

inreb, please don't think my replies are directed at you soley. I actually understand & agree with about 90% of what you are saying. I can say one thing the HD's you speak of are 100% what my father likes. I'm more of a bobber fan think late 40's early 50's this is why I like the looks of the HD 48. Mind you the Victory Gunner looks nice as well.

No need for mods, this thread is tame compared to some I have read on GTAM.

Jampy00 - Do some test rides. If you buy a cruiser of any brand look me up and I'll ride with you. Cheers
