Ontario's new electric vehicle incentives

So you can get $6000-$10,000 off the purchase of an electric vehicle in Ontario under the new incentives. Anyone looked into whether that can be used for electric motorcycles? Single drivers also get to use the HOV lanes for free.

At the AutoShow this weekend there were a few models they were saying you'd get $14k off from the incentives. Of course they may have been lying as my coworker tells me he double checked the MSRP of all the models he liked and they were all $5k-6k higher than what he was told at the show. Last year we have some Ford rep claiming their electric car (forget the model, electric Focus maybe?) got 300 km range. Checked it out online later and it was actually only 100 km (Dad is looking to buy an all electric so he was excited by that and then ****** when he found out they lied).

Autoshow rep's are for the most part tools, in my experience. They are right about the new rebates though but that is the maximum, which will only apply to some cars.

If you need 300km all-electric range check out the new Chevy Bolt it should be arriving at dealers later this year. It should qualify for the maximum rebate since it seats 5 and has a large(r) battery. MSRP not announced (yet).

We wanted to check that out. It wasn't there. Neither was the new all electric Smart nor the new plug in Prius nor the new Tesla Model 3. Model X was there but it's the same price as the S I think (aka unaffordable to most).

My Dad would be happy with 150 km real world range. He said every thing he's read is that the ones claiming 135 km actually only get about 100 km range.

Yeah Model 3 wont be officially unveiled until next month

Bolt was indeed there, you must have missed it.
Dunno how we missed it since we went specifically looking for it and asked a guy at the Chevy booth about it while looking at the Volt instead. Is it possible it was gone by the time we went on last Saturday? I'm pretty sure we looked in the area it's parked in that video and it was not there.

Entirely possible, it hasn't been at some major auto shows in the US I know, maybe they took it away to appear elsewhere. It is still pre-production after all.

On a different, more motorcycle related note, I learned at the bike show there is now another dealer for Zero in Ontario - Classy Chassis and Cycles in Lakefield (near Peterborough). Guy at the show (I presume the owner) was super nice, we chatted about Zeros for a bit.

Generally speaking the variation you are seeing is between summer and winter driving. In the summer most EVs I know (including my Volt) will deliver MORE than the stated range. Of course it depends how you drive, 130km/h will drain the battery a lot faster than 110km/h. Just like a gas car...

150km real world range in *winter* is pretty much unheard of on any EV currently for sale. That will change real soon. Using the electricity to heat the air is pretty inefficient, especially if it is resistive heating (Volt) instead of an air-source heat pump (2013+ Nissan Leaf).

I've been known to try to push my EV range in winter by turning off the heat and driving the with my 12V heated socks on. Wife thinks I'm a little nuts, she's probably right :P

Yes. This is why we were interested in the new vehicles.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with your wife. I would have to be asking myself daily ...... why would I go trough that?

You write you have a Volt, why do you need to go to this extend anyway. What am I missing? Is our ICE unit refusing to work? Or you just refuse to burn fuel?

It's hard to beat the physics, even for GM ... LOL

The new models all have or will have temperature battery management, so when plug in, the battery will be in optimal state ready to go, even in the middle of winter. Only when you start unplugged it will cost you energy because the cars will use power to manage the battery and preheat it, but using battery power at the same time .... Not good from range standpoint. Once you get going, it will not make much difference, except for accesorial cabin heating, but the modern heat pumps and heat recovery from the electric motors should help to reduce the penalty in shorter range.
