Insurance for older bikes

Plenty of companies out there would be more than happy to take your money from you.

i believe td has a cap on either 20 or 30 years unless youre already covered with them then that's a dif story. Aside from that, many companies will insure you. Just need to provide the typical safety and pic of the bike for some

Almost every company that insures bikes will insure a bike regardless of the age. State farm (now Certas, try mike duffy for an agent, his office specialises in bikes), JR Duffy (Intact), Riders choice (Intact). I know TD and Dalton Timmis are not big fans of older bikes, theyll either just not quote you or quote you something stupid like 16k a year. The first three i mentioned will also be your best deal for young riders, if youre under 25 theyre probably the only choice.

I had my '78 insured with State Farm. I dealt with Seamus Kelly 888-476-3276... he was great to deal with, and came to me to get the paperwork signed.

TD wouldn't insure it, they said it was too old, and
Dalton Timmis wanted something ridiculous like $3k for basic liability, despite advertising that they "specialize" in vintage bikes.

Why such high insurance on an older bike? I dont understand. Its not like they're woth more?

Dalton Timmis as a very good program for Classic/Vintage bikes. TD will not insure a bike that is more than 30 years old.
There are stipulations to this policy. Last time I used them for this I had to be over 30 years old myself, more then 5 years riding, and had to get an appraisal done. Limited Km's per season and no taking it to work, shopping, ect ect

There 's difference between old bikes and vintage bikes. Just old bikes are cheap to insure, because you get liability only. There is no point to comprehensive.
If you have a rare MV Agusta or something, the insurance is on the value as appraised.
Generally speaking, DT vintage insurance is pretty cheap on a common older bike for just liability.

My 80 GS1100 is with Intact. Some companies will allow you for cheap liability only policy, IF you have a car insured with them.

One caveat about insuring old bikes. Some older bikes have a non-conforming VIN. They don't follow the 17 character standard currently used on all modern vehicles. This causes problems for some insurance companies because they can't register the VIN in their systems. Thus they can't offer insurance. This happened to me with an 1987 BMW K100 I owned for many years. Even had it insured with TD for five years then one year they claimed they couldn't insure me any longer for exactly this reason. Called around and got the same story from everyone I spoke to. Eventually found a broker who could help.

Check that the VIN on the bike conforms to correct modern format.

I have a 71 honda CB450. when I first put insurance on it i did it through State Farm Nicole McCann, i was 27 and i payed about $1100 a year for four years. This season after talking to friends and learning im paying more than i should. I decided to call around. I got a fair bit of the run-around but in the end I ended up with Dalton Timmis (intact) with a regular liability policy for $650 a year. Next year i meet the criteria (30+ years old and 5 years of license) for there Vintage policies. When and if i go that route it will be like $400 a year but with some restrictions. I think the restrictions are 2500km annually, no commuting, stay within 50kms of my residence.

I have used the same insurance agent for my car and home for 30 years.
When I first bought a motorcycle, it was 20 years old but low mileage.
The agent found me insurance. It is only for personal liability, no theft or collision.
Although I have spent many happy hours restoring it to near new, to the insurance company it really isn't worth much more than the $1500 I paid for it.
This is generally the rule for older bikes.
Don't pay a small fortune for collision or other insurance if it's not going to pay off.
