RACE Round 1 - May 16-17

Why is it race has timing and we don't..

Do you want to pay another $50 per weekend for the transponder or buy one for about $400 - $500? There was a substantial investment that the organizer had to make, too.

On top of that, the timing loops at Shannonville were not properly installed. The yellow transponders are supposed to be good for 100 mph and are what VRRA opted to use. They worked for the first 3 or 4 years but are now unreliable.

I've got a wedding tonight. I could have possibly made the drive there and back but it's too much hassle. I'm going to try the surprise show up on Sunday routine and start from the back. It'll be my test day and hopefully my bike cooperates this time.

Nice first place today. Maybe you don't need to ride Saturdays ;)

Yes

RACE has that timing system because they bought it during better times (several years ago).

The thing that irks me about it is that RACE took the cost benefit (by cutting back timing and scoring staff) but also used it as a profit center (by charging for rentals). And, the VRRA did some testing and established that the yellow transponders would work for them ... except that they didn't, in the long run. I already have a couple of expensive paperweights, in the form of expensive transponders that we were forced into (by various racing organizations, not just RACE/VRRA) but which became obsolete.

CSBK built the transponder cost into their entry fees and lends you a transponder for each event ... means they deal with the transponders that crap out and I don't have another expensive paperweight.

Not a fan of having to buy expensive transponders ... not a fan of paying to rent them when the race organization is getting the benefit of not paying timing and scoring staff ... the young 'uns wouldn't understand.

My skepticism of these systems probably has something to do with another system that another organization used some years ago, whose (expensive) transponders turned out to be completely intolerant of the slightest bit of moisture. Rain race? No workie. Still have that expensive good-for-nothing little box in a spares bin somewhere.

I don't like the "no user serviceable parts inside" non-replaceable battery of the MyLaps system.

Had a great day. Not much more to report and besides, I went to a keg party right after the races, and am in no shape to post on the interwebnets.

Dave, you're sandbagging it!

Have a great weekend everyone.

O I was slow. But you need to be careful looking at my times. The same transponder gets moved between the 250, an SV and a R6.

And the old man got beaten by his kid head to head on the SVs. Sad sad day for the old man.

You must be proud

Hey that's great! That was probably the politest trash talk back in the trailer, lol!

Hope you all have a great season, catch up with you soon.

A few pics from my weekend:

Glad I couldn't see what was behind me. ;) I think this was me passing on the inside of 3 (LT7).

Top five in the AM 600 race. At this time, I was fifth. Attrition gave me a third place. If I'd had a better start and not lost some time battling it out with (iirc) about four bikes to get that position, I think I could have contended for a higher placing, but you know... that's racing.

Rocking the HKR sticker. There are two stories about that.

Headed for the main straight.

Getting permanently booted out of Novice on the loudspeakers as I rode around with the flag. Not the first time this has happened in a Novice race, won't be the last.

(hey, they made me run it)

Debating what I'll do as far as further racing this year. The bike is pretty tired for actual racing. :/

I followed you for a few laps in warm up. You were moving and should be in AM :)

See you out there next round!

Apparently there is something about the races in the Belleville paper today.
