Costco: is it too onerous to be worth it?

I have to take this moment and apologize, guys.

I watched the Costco Customer Training video last night after making this thread:

It has now become abundantly clear to me that if I desire a superior product, I must learn the protocol first and accept it without question. No soup for me.

Lol. They don't force you to shop there. The membership requirement is known up front.

If it doesn't seem worth it any more, cancel.

Business seems good for the most part.

If I didn't know any better, I would think the economy is doing great every time I pass by the place.

I don't go there much anymore. Too crowded. I got some good deals there, like a safe, computer, etc. and I have been a member for 20 years, but it always seems jammed with people these days.
 
They tend to get exploited somewhat. Had a coworker purchase a cd or dvd burner, use it for six months, and then return it for a full refund in perfect working condition, then he promptly bought the newer model which was now less expensive. Told me I should do the same. I guess that's why the warranty on computer parts changed.
 
Its the other way around. When economy is good and people have extra money for shopping, bargain and bulk places like CostCo, No Frills etc loose customers. Its when No Frills, Wal-mart, Costco etc flourish shows what average people feel. If you were confident in your salary and had abundant monthly budget why would you deal with the hassle of shopping at CostCo? Same reason Dollar stores are flourishing in US.

Pretty sure I heard last week that Costco is the largest grocery retailer in Canada, bigger than Loblaws even. I like Costco, I also notice that their staff always seem happy too. I don't find the rules onerous at all, they are very easy to understand and follow and it's a small price to pay for the savings I make.

Oooooooooh now I get it. Of course, they make $ off memberships!

So they should just do what the YMCA does; you can use the service once without a membership but you have to give them ID. If you go a second time, you'll need to get a membership. Simples.

Agreed. It's stupid to spend that type of time. I've never gone to costco just to fill up simply for the lineup.

typically drop off wife at the door, go for gas, and 10-15min later I'm filled up and shopping with her.

sorry, couple pages back you confessed to buying frozen bagged meatballs from Food basics, everything you post in this thread is now suspect.....
 
Any one has any experience with Costco in the USA?
It is like a different store altogether, 'cause it is empty most of the time.

At the gas pump, I have never had to wait (not even 5 minutes) to fill the tank. Here in Ontario? Forget, I used the Costco gas once and never went back. It takes too long.

To go into my local store, it is better to do it Monday - Friday, because Sat-Sun is a madhouse. I refuse to go there on the weekends anymore.
 
For premium fuel, the costco gas line may be worthwhile (much cheaper than normal stations), for regular gas, there is no way I am waiting in that line.
 
One question, Does anyone here works at Costco?

Why do they have to check the bill at the door (on the way out)?

What is the real reason?

What happens if they don't scratch my receipt?

I was just in one in Minneapolis area, a week ago. Yes, not crowdy at all, seemed like better selection and deals (understandable) and they had self-checkout express lanes as well .... and I could use Amex.

Theft prevention? ... the only thing I could think of. I personally doubt it does prevent theft, but who knows maybe it does.
