Adaptive brake lights

I think it's a great idea. I believe some cars in europe have this. I remember reading that the concept wasn't technically legal on on ontario roads because flashing lights are only for specific uses ie emergency vehicles etc. but who cares if it saves your ass

$100 for a light bulb? F-that. If you want flashing brake lights, buy a flashing brake light for much less money and skip the accelerometer crap.

The statement on the website about people becoming accustomed to flashing lights may be technically true, but if you are hitting the brakes enough times that people ignore your brake lights, you need to change your riding style, not your lights.

EDIT (to address comments above):
With VCDS, you can make VW's flash brake lights when ABS is activated .

The #1 problem with this is the drop-in LED replacement for a bulb. LED taillights that work need to be arrays, I have not seen a single LED "bulb" behind a coloured housing that was actually brighter than the incandescent bulb it replaced.

There are other solutions, of course. I have heard of wire-in module that will do the same thing for anything that is connected to the brake light, but I can't remember who makes it. There is the Signal Dynamics BackOFF but that is not triggered by inertia (before anyone suggests it)

EBay has them. I bought a wig Wag brake light flasher for my Versys to wake up the cagers.

It's programmable and I have it set for three quick flashes then steady when I apply the brakes. It took twenty minutes to cut and solder it into the existing wiring and program it.

They run about 20 dollars before shipping.

Yeah I have something similar right now too but it only works if I brake.

Last week I was on dvp and guess it suddenly started to rain... I was going at good speed around a turn and did not want to brake.

But with car tailing me so close I was worried if just let the throttle go he would hit me.

Some of my bicycle folks use something similar battery based which makes sense. The battery based was still 100$. So thought that safelightstore.com bulb as better option.

I don't think anyone has used them yet.

Any proof this actually works or changes anything or is it just "flashy lights save lives"?.

From personal experience, the flashing draws my attention (assuming it is actually bright enough to see, some undertails are pitifully underpowered).

Mercedes apparently wants to make these standard, which means once everyone uses them , they will become useless, like daytime headlights.

I think for motorcycles this should be a must especially when you can deaccelarate very fast compared to cars.

Especially when you get cager tailing you, which happens a lot on 4xx highways a lot.
I know people say change your riding style etc but it's more about how others see you and anything to let them know when you are showing is good

The M2Exit course advises riders to tap their brake switch a few times to signal the motorcycle is slowing down.

A V-twin has great engine braking, so without warning, if the rider rolls off on the throttle, it slows down much faster than a car would, so signalling your intention to brake or slow down becomes an important safety factor.

I've run my flasher for a year, and only once in that time did a cager come close to rear ending me.

I have noticed that vehicles no longer tail gate me so much in traffic.

In my opinion, it's serving it's purpose, and for the price I paid, I'll continue to install them on any future bike I own.
I'm considering one for the car as well, but then, it has four wheels, a seat belt and air bags...
