My friend's 09 Ninja 250R just came out of storage and wouldn't start. So he called the nearest shop, Markham Outdoor Power, who said they will fix it for $100-$200, will take a week. After 1 week they still have not begun working on his bike but they called 2 weeks later to say it's actually going to cost at least $700 for a new carburetor.

He did not do anything to winterize before storage so naturally I would assume it is the ever-so-common issue with gunk in the carburetor. I told him we'll clean out the carb this weekend and see if that fixes the issue but now the shop wants to charge him $700 even without ordering any parts.

Obviously unhappy, my friend argued and now they say they will still charge $230 for "preseason maintenance" even though they have not done so much as an oil change.

I don't know if there are any other options besides paying their ridiculous fee. Has anyone else have similar experiences?

Your friend should get them to itemize their preseason maintenance work.

Thanks, that's a good idea to ask for itemized invoice. And seafoam is also a good idea, will be first thing we try since cleaning the carb is a lot of work.

I think you will find that the jets on that carb gum up easily and cause most of the no start issues. Do some research on an owners forum.

Some have had success leaking blow torch propane into the air box while cranking. Do not use ether or any sort of quick start.

If they spent 2h looking at it and removed the carbs to check thats 160 right there. New carbs required on an 09 after only sitting a winter....thats just bananas! I had a few 80's xs400's I worked on, carbs were gummed up bad after sitting for 15 years in a shed, and they only required a bit of cleaning.

Yeah, I suppose if they did spend about 2 hours on it then there is a diagnostics fee. Oh well, can just take it as a lesson learned

Take it to kneedrager on the forum he has fixed this many times
