I find that I don't have a lot of time to ride for fun (not that there's a lot of fun to be had out London way), but I do have to go to work everyday. That's why I commute on my bike. Straight lines are a little more tolerable to me on a bike. I've also got enough luggage that I can stop for groceries or whatever on my way home. I actually tend to use my bike for almost everything but "fun" rides.

This might sound heretical, but I commute to work on my scooter. I literally pay less than $4 per week in gas! Mind you, I'm only about 20 mins from work. Lunch goes in the seat, and when I arrive at work, I put my helmet, gloves and protective glasses in the seat.
Scooters are a lot of fun to ride. I have a saying: "The scooter puts a grin on my face, but my motorcycle puts crap in my pants." ie. they're both fun to ride but for different reasons. Don't knock it till you try it.

I've been contemplating doing this also. But I would need something bigger than you 50cc scoot. I want to be able to travel down 70kph roads without being a moving speed bump.

Same. I have a 10 min commute down Yonge street and my scooter is perfect for it. Mind you, it was ideal when I could park on the sidewalk across from my office.
After work, the motorbike comes out.
I drove home from the Airport yesterday in rush hour, heavy traffic, I'd estimate 1/3 drivers texting while driving. it's out of control and the OPP are doing diddly about it.

I have no issues when cagers are phone watching when idling on the highway.
It's the yahoo's that are txting while actually moving that the police need to target. Once in a blue moon i see the cops trying to do something on the DVP.

Run for office. That slogan right there should get you in. People need to out the dawn phone down or be chauffered either by private car or the loser cruiser.
As for the Opp don't worry about them. They're setting up the next radar zone to nail all the real bad guys doing 15 over.

If you are commuting and are worried about people cutting you off, you are not paying enough attention to what is going on around you.
I have been commuting from Mississauga to down town Toronto for 17 years and still love it.
I rarely get cut off by a car that I did not expect to be cut off by. I can predict 98% of the cars that want into my lane.
If you are being surprised by this, you need to re-think your skills.
Pay more attention to the drivers around you, pay attention to what signals they are transmitting.
I love commuting.
