The Honda Grom is made in Thailand. The Suzuki GW is made in China. The Suzuki TU is made in Japan. So Japanese brand may not mean Japanese built, if that makes any difference to you

Don't rule out the 400 series of highways. I bet you get an invite to a cottage or to go camping, and then you find yourself mounted on 4 grand worth of 'Damn it!'

I road a gs500 for a half year and 10,000km and found myself trading up to a Suzuki Bandit 600 in the spring. After all the ministry fees and sales tax I would have been better off starting on the Bandit.

I really suggest you look at a 250 so you don't get bored in a season.
 
Seems like a lot of doh ray me for a very limited purpose machine either way you go. Neither one appeals to me but, the factors I'd use would be brand reputation and what gets my blood flowing when I look at it parked during the winter.

If I lived in Toronto and just needed something to bomb around on, I'd look at a Ruckus......................

If I wanted to bring an extra helmet and split a sammich with someone, I'd likely get Bonnie or other standard style bike. Honda 500 or something?

All of this nonsense! Forget the Grom, Ruckus, CBRs of any displacement, Vespas, etc.

You obviously need a Burgman 650, then all your problems will be solved! Hunger and disease will become things of the past, and world peace will be achieved!

It's not necessarily where it's made but to whose specs and standards. A Chinese company, based in China, that targets niche markets, will find it difficult to compete with Honda in terms of R&D or quality, no matter where the actual Honda plant is located.
 
I see that your going with the street/ cafe look. Love it. I have to admit that I liked the misfit at first too... But at the end of the day choose a bike that may meet your expectation and more. I would go with cbr125, ninja 250 or if you absolutely must pay a price for the looks the tu250. Your bike will open your horizons, so don't limit your uses to no 400.

My first bike(?) was a Ruckus, and it was awesome. Even today a guy I work with, who's been off-roading longer than I've been walking, was talking about how much he'd love to have one. I always think that if I had the space and the means, I'd keep a Ruck on the side.

The only real issue was the fact that on hills, even small hills, I'd rarely hit 40kph. Damn those 50cc's!

True story. Traded the Ruckus for a Vespa 150. GREAT city ride. The only thing I didn't like was the small wheels. Otherwise, (sorry but it's true), it was a better rainy day ride, and there's so much storage on a scooter compare to a motorcycle. (The Ruckus carried a crazy amount of s***).

Now I ride dual sport - almost seems like a natural progression. The upright position, and the handling and gearing are spot on. So I don't use the 400 series highways. I did it once on the Vespa - scariest ride ever! I find a way to get where I need to go on the scenic routes, which is a bonus.

The built in storage on the NC750S (they increased the displacement this year), ergonomics etc on this bike make it an interesting bike. I really need to try one on a demo ride. The 6500 rpm redline would take some getting used to though.

For the OP... A CB 500F or CB 500X would be an interesting option for you. Upright ergos, decent insurance rate, and enough power to not get bored too quickly and get you onto the 400 series roads. A CB500 or Ninja 300 are probably the ultimate starter bikes for most people. However, a slightly used CBR250 or Ninja 250 would probably make more sense because your depreciation hit will be minimal when you go to sell it. If you are sure that 400 series highways are not in your immediate future a used CBR125 probably makes the most sense.
