Nope.
Better have it on video, as its your word against his/her. With evidence of bodily harm to that person via the bb or pellets.
Best to eliminate yourself from the situation prior to escalation, or remove yourself all together.

Can a person not use 'reasonable' force? Or is the question in the legality of possessing a loaded/ready air gun?

Air guns under 500 fps are legal to purchase from stores in municiple cities. owners therefore keep these arms within their living quarters. If an an aggressor instigated an attack and your only means of self defense was to use your legally purchased, over the counter air gun, this should not be illegal for home self defense purposes.

How you word what happened will be the difference between you being justified and not in all of the above scenarios.
The words "attempt" and "being attacked" are two different paths.
Reasonable force you would require multiple witness' recanting the same story that the other person was the "agressor" and you gave that person all attempts to stop.
Excessive force would easily come into play here.
On top of the fact, the other person could easily say you shot them first.

It's not, but the cops and prosecutor will make your life living hell and attempt to put you away for it. Legally you can do it under the conditions that i posted above.

Unless the perp actually attacked you during the B and E, and you prove it, expect to be in a world of legal hurt if it did play out as you describe.
It would not require multiple witnesses. It would require the evidence to back up your version of the story.. but that could come in many forms. No matter what happened, expect to be charged and have the courts sort it out. Numerous examples or cases you can look up..
Haven't read the thread but here's the scoop:
If someone comes at you with a knife with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm or death you're allowed to respond in kind (that means with ANYTHING including a firearm).
Once you exercise your right to defend yourself you then need to convince the police of your version of events.
After that you still risk charges from an overzealous Crown Attorney.

Yeah, no ****. An air rifle is probably the last thing you'd want to use for defence. Weak, usually just one shot, and will likely just enrage whoever is attacking more than anything.
Keep a machete beside your bed and have a hole dug somewhere to avoid the police/crown attorney circus. ;-)
Co2 released at 450 fps loaded with a full 16rd magazine will make a grown man weep
