How to enter CDN Postal Code

How does one enter a CDN Postal Codes in a USA gas pump?
More and more security requires card users to enter a postal code in the gas pump when using a credit card. But 'merican postal codes are all numbers and are one character less than Cdn ones.

Anyone know a solution - other than entering the station and pleading your case with the gas attendant?

Fish the three numbers out of your postal code, enter those, and "00" afterwards.

For example, if your postal code is A1B 2C3 then enter "12300"

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

This - Have a few postal Codes on hand so if yours doesn't work, you can attempt a few others. Mine had always worked

I've never found any pattern to where Postal code is required, but the formula above has always worked.

Any particular gas station chains do that or is it a wide spread phenomena? I haven't noticed it yet. Last time I went to the States was Pennsylvania through Buffalo a month ago - mostly older gas stations.

I found that PA and all states south seem to have this requirement? Not sure if it is a hard and fast rule, but it is my expereince of the places I have been

When I was in the the US that was always required when using a credit card. Most of the modern service stations anyway

Not a pain in the *** at all if you actually want to fill the tank............

It's not a pain at all when you know what you're doing. We make several trips across the border every year and have a great system. We know about how much gas we'll need so the wife goes in and pays accordingly. I stay outside and pump the gas while she loads up on goodies. Only once that I can ever remember when the pump shut off before the tank was completely full. The wife gave the attendant a five dollar bill but it only took another 75 cents.
I had my info stolen from a gas station right here in Belleville. So now, I pay cash for most things.

lol that is the biggest pain in the *** that pumping gas in the United States can give you. Using a credit card and entering in your numerical characters followed by two 0's is a good system. If you want an example of a "great system" - that would be getting a US dollar credit card, and converting CAD -> USD when our dollar is high. That way you save money, and it is not a pain in the ***. That's the "great system" I use. ;) Also my wife stays in the car.

Obviously, caboose, you have no idea what you're doing. for shame, man. for shame.

I will go and sit in the corner and think about what I did.

None of us prefer to use a credit card for better exchange rates and points. None of us like to gas and go and not spend half an hour fueling up.

I guess I'm just unreasonable. Also, the guy thats waiting to get gas while someone's car is blocking the pump because their wife is inside loading up on goodies is unreasonable too.
I like to spend time in places I like. In a gas station beside an interstate is not a place I like.

Credit card is way easier than cash.

On a long trip, we can fill both our bikes twice a day, spending about $60/day. That kind of cash burn means either more time at ATMs or carrying obscene amounts of cash. Neither is more appealing than just swiping and going.

As for credit card number theft, I've had to have my card replaced three times maybe in the last 25 years. Every single time the CC company's caught the fraud before I have, gave me a call and told me a new card is in the mail. Yes, it's a pain to be without a CC for a few days, but we have other cards we can use and the fraudulent charges are always reversed to no inconvenience to me.

tldr: CC > Cash
