I'm in the market for a sv650s. I've been looking around kijiji and it seems the (2008-2009) go about $5000-5500 but the (2004-2007) prices are jumping all over the place

Of course there are the after market parts/KM's/etc. But lets say its stock with 10k, s version with fairings, what would be an accepting price for the different years, in your opinion? Not asking for the BEST deal price or anything like that, just a range of values where it is reasonable to negotiate at.

I would think a 5-year old SV would be in the $5,000 to $5,500 range, depending on condition and mileage. As you start getting older, I would think the price would drop to around $2,500-$3,000 for a 2004. I have a 2004 SV, s model, with about 45,000 kms on it. I would think it's worth no less than $2,500. Mine is in pretty good shape so maybe I could get more. When I bought it, it was 5-years old and I paid $4,500 in Port Perry. Going outside of the GTA will fetch you a better deal.
 
I've been looking at SV650's recently and basically every one in Ontario is way overpriced.

A few months ago there were a couple reasonable ones for sale but they went fairly quick. For example there was a 2007 SV650 full fairing 24000km with some decent mods and new tires for $4000 (sometime around October-November) which is what I would consider a good deal. Glad I didn't pick that one up, because I would have had a nasty surprise trying to insure it when my renewal came around... Needless to say I'm not shopping for an sv650 anymore.

You'll find the best deals between May-Sept. Buying off season doesn't always mean you get the best value for the bike, you just get lower prices for less options, which usually translates to less 'good' bikes out there. I'd say anything over 2007 is worth $4000 and up, and anything less than 2006 is worth $4000 or less. This is a ballpark, like you said it depends on many other factors.

In the past I have bought a 2007 SV650 for 4500, and a 2009 SV650 for 5800. The '07 was stock and the '09 was modded, both super low mileage.

We sold our 2011 for $5150 with new rubber and certified last year.

Considering some of the new machines out there ( we got a 2013 Fz8 for $7k brand new )- I'd be cautious buying older machines above $4k
 
Pay attention to whats parts are bolted on. If you can find one with an aftermarket shock and fork internals it is worth the extra $$. The stock suspension is GARBAGE.

Not much changed from 05+ so I wouldn't worry too much about year. Just find one that has been properly cared for.

any tips from buying in Québec? did some searching and it looks like the prices are more reasonable up there.

im trying to sell an 05 sv650s with 25000km for 3500 and people telling me its over priced.(no mods)
 
Last year I sold a really clean 02 sv650s with 18k stock except Corbin seat for $2900. I wanted a little more, but the girl that bought it bargained better than me! I even delivered it to Mississauga for her, picked up my bandit 1200 in Brampton on the way home though... Lol

I sold a 2009 650R for $4500 last seasons so I'd presume an SV would be priced similarly.

What are some things to watch out for/ask about for a high mileage sv? 30k/40k above

Garbage is a strong word. If you ride very aggressively, on the track or are a heavy person then yes. SV is not designed as a SS. Suspension is not the greatest, true but I never had any major issues during the 20K I put on it, all over Ontario. Depends what you intend to do with the bike.

For me, one thing that had to go is the stock seat, replaced it with Sargent.

Regulator/rectifier and stator issues - but that's common on many older bikes.
I've had the spark plug from the front cylinder shake a bit loose, V-twins vibrate a bit. The plug boot may shake loose as well, make sure it's on so the dirt doesn't get inside.

SV is a very affordable motorcycle when new, previous year's models sometimes under $7,000 plus tax. I'd pay - for a good shape - 2005 around $2,800; 2009 ~ $4,200.

If you really want to save money - find a 1st gen SV (1999-2002). Don't pay a penny more over $2,200 in a superb shape. Carbs were not cold blooded, so you won't miss FI too badly, other than that, not much of a difference from 2nd gen, other than looks. (new frame - Curvy vs Pointy)

Buying from Quebec is always a risk. But you can buy Ontario bikes outside the GTA area for much less if you're willing to go for a drive. Prices in here are so stupid I pretty much stopped looking.
