Panel suggests 10 cent per liter gas hike to fund transit.

Of course you'll vote for it... you're voting for the rest of us to subsidize your transit  I don't work downtown, I don't go downtown, I want nothing to do with it.

Idea is ridiculous. If you take transit, you pay for it. Driving a car is already way more expensive, so you're getting a deal regardless. Pony up the extra yourself.

I am trying to figure out if it's an immature statement or plain stupid. By taking the transit, I remove one car off the highway, so you can take your goddamn car faster to wherever you're going. If all of us will be taking cars, 401 will be moving backwards, not standing still like it is right now.

Yeah lets pretend you're taking transit for the good of the world

You're taking it to save time and/or money. I'm not interested in subsidizing your bus ticket by paying more for gas at the pumps. We have enough taxes as it is, the government needs to find the money elsewhere.

In typical Ontario fashion, for the umpteenth time the province wants to tax more saying it will fix things, even though it never has fixed things in the last 25 years. It`s only gotten worse in fact.

Ontario has a long record of tax increases and is now one of the highest taxed provinces in Canada
Ontario has a long record of taking those tax increases and still making the provincial debt and deficit worse, paradoxically, yet unsurprisingly. It now has one of the worst debts and deficits in Canada.

Reminds me of the working definition of insanity.

But hey, the libs keep getting elected with their abysmal record and consistent tax increases, so expect it as the norm.

Now what does all that tell you about the average person?

Open your eyes. Ford was in power when current contract was signed, including making TTC an essential service. It was supposed to be a big win for Ford.

And for mmmnaked, no, I don't take transit to save the world, I take it to save my time. But I could, like you, enjoy GTA highway traffic every day. Toronto has not built anything subway-related in like 30 years, even Sheppard line was a joke, considering that it was Lastman's own line. Someone will have to pay to reduce GTA gridlock - be it you or your kids. If you don't like - go vote for someone who is against it. If he loses - move out.

thats what im doing moving out, i hate ontario, always have.

+1.

Kathleen Wynne has some real gall, suggesting Ontarions pay more after the Liberals robbed the province of 1.3 billion dollars in the gas plant fiasco. Then the health minister turns a blind eye as the head of Ornge rakes in ten million. If you believe any new tax will solve the GTA gridlock problem, you're a damn moron.

NOT ANOTHER GOD DAMN PENNY!!!!!

Absolutely against it....

When HST kicked in and gas was taxed at 13% vs 8%, they already effectively gave themselves a 5% raise in tax, which at 1.30C is 6.5c. Did the roads and infrastructure improve, did the extra revenue go towards Transit? No! In fact, Ontario pays a lot more in fuel tax that gets dumped into "general revenue" coffers than it pays back on infrastructure and improvements.

That extra 10c increase, would mean SFA as it would get funneled to general revenue again.

Also, its been proven again and again, that raising taxes does not increase revenue. Go ahead, raise the cost of fuel and people will just drive less. Simple as that.

And lastly, Why the **** should the rest of Ontario subsidize public transit in the **** hole that is Toronto? Pay for your own crap....Oh i know why, cuz Liberals main support is in Toronto, so lets pander to the voting base while we plunder the mainly Conservative rural Ontario.

This covers it all. Let the users cover their own costs. The whole "I'll be one less car on the road so congestion goes down so why shouldn't everyone chip in" attitude.... **** you. fund your own ttc. taxing my gas even more isn't going to pay for jack for the ttc. just line some ******** pockets

another post right on the money. I love the entitled attitude in this ****** province. Everyone with their damn hands out while everyone else pays for them.

Very well said. I already pay between 133.9 and 139.9 up here for gas. If Torontonians want more funding for transit get a better mayor and let us vote the Liberals out. I doubt the Liberal gov't would refuse donations...

But you get your plates for less, and I think get to skip the E test. Isn't there some income tax exemption for northern residents? That's it, I'm not funding the GTA or anybody north of Parry Sound. And all you guys in south western Ontario that are unemployed because your factory closed? Pool your money and start an air ambulance service, or pretend to build a gas/electric generating plant, just put up a few old portable classrooms and run some pipe around, no need to ever finish or even have a real plan. The liberals will pay you millions to take it down, then you retire like royalty.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that the proposed subway expansions aren't the only solutions being recommended. The proposed funding should go to improvements to infrastructure as a whole. It should be a combination of transit improvements and new highways (roads). Not just in Toronto but throughout the GTA. Most of the Traffic congestion created within Toronto is from people who live outside and are commuting to downtown. I am in the minority. I actually commute the opposite way. I can't believe what these people go through every day gridlock along the 401 every morning.

Something has to be done and soon.

Why don't they just use the gas hike that was supposed to be earmarked for road maintenance?

I say we cut Union Station loose.

I'm fed up with subsidizing something for hordes of ungrateful wretches.

This subsidizing transit should work both ways.

We have 10 cents federal tax, 14.7 provincial and then on top of that 13% HST or roughly 16.25 cents per liter. So taxes are 41 cents per liter given its $1.25

So 33% of fuel we buy is just taxes, that's on top of the ******** yearly "sticker", 13% HST we pay on vehicles no matter how many times they're sold.

If these c**k suckers up it by another 10 cents we'll be paying a cool 41% tax rate at the pump. WTF?

Where is all this money going?

BTW if this nonsense goes through everything will increase in price. Fuel is the biggest cost for transportation companies and guess what, they'll just pass that cost onto their shippers who will in turn pass it onto the consumers.

Man speaks the truth.

Onterrible is a mess. The infrastructure is in shambles.

They can raise a hell of a lot more money by looking inwards and letting go of unnecessary staff.. I swear a mentally challenged person is more helpful than some of the city staff

People live outside of the GTA. I'm about 4 or 5 hours from the GTA. I have no interest in that area of the province. At 30, I've been on public transit in the GTA 3 times.
For me, if I want to go out and get something from a store that isnt the basics, I have to get in my truck and drive over 90 minutes ONE WAY to the nearest city. Paying an extra 10c/ liter for your public transit will do nothing to help the millions of others that live, work and play outside of the center of the universe.
All this will do is make people less likely to do driving that isn't mandatory. Less tourism, less sales on recreational vehicles etc. prices of goods will increase, reducing people's extra income even further, reducing the chance of people spending money on leisure even more.

The public outside of the GTA doesn't give a damn about the GTA and why should we? Add toll roads to get down town, it wouldn't bother me for the 1 or 2 times a year I go down there and you can generate your own damn revenue. You choose to live in the city, you deal with the city. I'll always be rural, I hate the city, and cant stand the typical citiot or "torontard".

With this proposal, and the new energy increases coming, I'm planning to build the smallest, most efficient house possible and basically being as off the grid as possible. It's sad that even making nearly $60,000 a year I am worried about my future and living somewhat comfortably.

Not sure if many people who suggest this realize the amount in severance pay that would be paid out......at least a months pay per year of service adds up quite fast!

For the record, we gave Harris two terms and ended up the same thing: Higher deficts (hidden, even!), almost all infrastructure projects cancelled or delayed. The tax cuts were crap because we couldn't afford them, so McGuinty was left to raise them in fits and spurts of ******** here and there.

I'm not really defending McGuinty - the libs found tons of new ways to squander money under him - but let's not pretend that this province has had a really decent leader since maybe Bill Davis.

I just don't know what we have to do to get a functional human being to run for office in this damned province.

Only puppets and power hungry people run for politics. The ones capable of running it properly have no incentive, public sector/self employment is much more profitable. This isn't a liberal vs conservative argument. This is "rob Peter to pay Paul, because Paul voted us in". I'm tired of raising number of people that we as productive members of society have to support and subsidize.

Public transit needs expansion? I agree, but don't do it off my back. Those who use, pay for it.

People commute due to insane housing prices in GTA. so make it less affordable to drive into downtown, if a dudes willing to commute for two hours than maybe raising tolls etc will force him not to commute. Or get a job outside GTA.

Hey my house needs renovation and I can't afford it. I'll vote in a law that makes my neighbours subsidize my renovations. "Oh you don't use my house? Too bad"
