Caboose has got it. I just cannot resist a star trek reference I guess... Was not meant to p'o anyone, particularly the original poster who asked an excellent question that most novices don't ask enough.
I LOVE my job. I also love answering questions on topics such as this. You people really need to email me more
Too often I see new guys show up with all the unnecessary stuff when they're just getting started. "race" tires being one of them, although sometimes they are too good of a deal too pass up, in which case its not a bad idea. All of which can and should be discussed with your tire rep of choice!
Street tires are the best choice for trackday riders up until about mid-pack yellow group. Here is why:
Best bang for the buck in most cases: They are so ridiculously cheap now (Anyone remember when street tires retailed for like $550/set?) and they LAST. Remember street tires are designed to work in a variety of conditions for around 8000km. Average trackday you log about 250km. math.
Brings me to my next point. They work in a variety of conditions. Polymers used in street tires are not found in race/track tires i.e. silica which keep them soft and grippy in the cold and wet. A set of streets will get you on track during a patchy day, a chilly day, or even a wet day while the guys with track tires ares waiting for the sun under their canopy. All conditions of which you should absolutely ride in when you are learning. You haven't really ridden the track until you ride it in the wet IMO.
You don't need to worry about heat cycling or warmers. Race tires are not designed to go slow or for many many heat cycles. They are meant to go fast, for a 12 lap race.
As long as you are riding smoothly and within your limits, any tire will give you fair warning when it is nearing it's end of days (general rule of thumb is that if you have to come over and ask your tire guy if your tire is done, it usually is!)
Using a street tire as a novice is smart and we highly recommend it. Which We saw more of it in fact. Keep it simple
As for the gorilla suit... that only comes out on special occasions and I don't even want to know how you guys knew about it...
Back to this nearly complete schedule business for me!
