Is this the beginning of the end for Harley?

H-D had to do something to address the smaller displacement market so I think its a good move.

At the end of the day, I figure its always good to have more choice and more interest in the motorcycle marketplace.. In Canada, we've had such limited choice for so long so its nice to see all the new models coming out, especially smaller cc ones. Im glad to see these H-D's just as I was glad to see that hot little KTM 390.

Harley DID address the small bike market with the Buell Blast thumper. It was a bizarre bike that fell apart just looking at it, and even Eric Buell starting doing bizarre things like crushing them (then people wonder why Harley shut him down).

No motorcycle manufacturer spends less on racing and R&D than Harley, so it's good to see them going towards water cooling, 6 speed transmissions, likely ABS soon. They still suffer from low power and high weight, as well as bad brakes and crap suspension. Even their own marketing list features like:
Locking gas cap!
Single caliper brakes!
Narrow front Wheel!
"Easy lock to lock sweep" -OOOoooo..the bars swivel!
..and that's it.

Aside from the copious amounts of typical HD bullsh8t, I see a very basic bike in line with 1980-90s bikes from elsewhere. It's 30 years out of date, which is better than the 50 years of their other bikes. But, they cannot sell their crap big twins in Europe, due to Euro3 and Euro4 regs, Ditch the cheap little plastic fairing and put a decent tail on it, put on some clubmans or clipons, some decent shocks and brakes, you could have an interesting bike. I note they are targeting women, which is a huge mistake, because even women don't want chick bikes. Like every Harley, the reviews with be tongue-biting, and stress the value.

Price is in-line for what you get, $6700-7500, taking advantage of the low US dollar and the high yen. Like most Harleys, you have to spend another $3-4K on aftermarket items to make them ridable. Although at $6700-7500, I wonder aloud how many Chinese parts are on that bike, and this may be a good thing, as the Milwaukee parts are nothing to be proud of.

Why they are doing this: sales of the big price Harleys is way down, because the typical target demographic is the hardest hit by the economy, and they are feeling the pinch of insurance, too. Lots of big Harleys make the rounds on used sales, as there really is no good reason to buy a new one. The poser blue collar professional market has dried up to to age demographics.

In a few years, a used Street 750 might make an interesting project bike.

I agree..more choice is good, and one day I would like to buy a decent bike made in North America.

Isn't this how most people get into motorcycles in the first place?

there's so much ****ing hating here

Everyone's so above things like this. MOtorcycles have always had a mysticism around it, and made kids run around holding 'air handlebars', making reving noises while curling their wrists on their bmx's, trying to keep up with motorcycles as they rode by, struggling to get a wave from a person on a bike...any of these things that seems 'amazing' to a kid are all forgotten and sneered at by practicality.

It's called growing up.
To each his own, and variety is good, but when people invade other's space with noise pollution for the sake of attention, it's just annoying.
When people grow up, they realize they live in a society.

But then I bought a motorcycle...

Right, so your arguement that once you grow up, that you shouldn't be buying something that looks good? Where did the noisepollution come into play?

I may be getting one since I see a rad. No way the 500 but the 750 maybe.
With the price 6700-7500 US MSRP, that's pretty good.

As for SOA comments, that irritates me when someone says it looks like SOA. lol
Majority of bikes on SOA are Dynas. The Dynas have been used by alot of 'outlaw' clubs because of how simple they are and how fast they get.
Most the 'outlaw' clubs had the Dynas before they got into SOA. And SOA is somewhat based off of HA therefore they needed HD bikes to be in it to look authentic.

Man, how touchy people are. I remember when it was desirable to want a replica of something...getting a bandit transam or a kitt. Getting a charger. Getting a Torino etc....

God forbid one rides a bike that even remotely resembles an SOA bike... "they may think i watch the show!! oh noez!"

People are waaaay too above every goddamn thing in life for their own good.

ok, we'll exclude the 2% of Harley riders who don't have straight pipes.

I thought I recognized that 750 design from somewhere:

RYCA has this kit for years.

I was not a part of that class.

Then again, i am also selling my bike in any case, so I WILL be art of that class. :)

Have you ever spoken to someone who rides a harley, a race bike, or drives a race car on city roads? 99% of the time the majority of comments you get from them are about all the attention they get while on/in it. I had a buddy with a 20k harley whatever it was and all he ever talked about were all the thumbs up he got, and occasionally how miserable it was to ride.

There is a reason harleys come with 10 grand worth of paint and chrome on them. So to the OP, no not the beginning of the end, unless the end of peoples fragile egos is also on its way. If i were a betting man i'd place money that harley out lasts christianity in my life time.

maybe its not the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning....

That's why these new bikes are doomed.

It's checkbook culture, buy the hog, gets some leather chaps and denim, a useless little helmet, off to Port Dover. I don't see these new bikes appealing to that crowd.

but, that typical Harley customer: the blue-collar type, and the wanna be badass accountant, both got killed off in this depression. Harley needs new customers.

I think its actually going to be the start of harley davidson taking over. They're such a well known brand that I see them gaining on the global marketplace with no problem. India is a huge market for them and its wise to start with lower end bikes. People have a need that need to be filled. The 500 cc range is perfect for the world marketplace. Not everywhere is like North America. I did see a video somewhere that really amused me though.

They had the bikes in India and they had the riders riding them... none of them hda any gear and actually were all skinny indian kids with abercrombie shirts on in bright colors. LOL.
I think they're poised nicely for huge growth.

I'm not sure Harley cares if North America likes these bikes or not. India, Malaysia , China. 1 billion people that have been riding 2013 Rangeet (sp?) which is a 1973 RD 350 yamaha and Royal Enfield.
There is an emerging class that will fall all over each other to own a Harley, any Harley.

gotta remember the global market, its not just Dentists from Jersey buying up HD

The 500 & 750 was really intended for the Indian market, so I doubt slow American sales will be a concern. Models come and go pretty frequently in the lineup as the demand changes. As for sales in general, they seem to be doing fine.

From the internet: "H-D reports that worldwide sales went up 6.2%, and this doesn't seem to be bad news at all. The US market saw 6.6% more Harley-Davidson sales in 2012 compare to 2011, while the rest of the planet bought 5.6% more H-D bikes.

The most spectacular sales increase as been reported in Latin America, with a whopping 39.2% increase over 2011. No less than 249,849 Harley-Davidsons found a new home in 2012, and still 2013 will bring the long-expected Indian-manufactured smaller-displacement bikes..."

So there's that and being connected politically at state/federal level like any big manufacturer. Any dip in the economy and some sort of funding likely kicks in (besides the usual tax/electrical deals).
