MV Agusta F3 Test Ride request

Most of us have purchased bikes without a test ride as I usually purchase a used bike. Once you sit on it you can usually tell if fits or not. Read the magazine reports they usually test them way better than most of us will ever. The current issue of Cycle Canada has a comparison that will provide great insight.

I find most motorcycle mags useless. They are afraid to write a bad review because they are sponsored by them. They might have a full covered page of ad there. Also the manufacturer provide the bike for free. Who would want to jeopardize their next free bike?

Asking other owners is a good start

Happy Dude, you sound similar to me, so perhaps my experience will be of use to you.

I started riding on a Ninja 500. The first few times I went WOT in 1st and 2nd, it was a revelation (first motorcycle ever). After a season, it was no longer feeling so fast in a straight line. I knew I wanted something quicker.

I'm with SF Insurance, so they're blind to bike type, only care about CC. Buying a Ninja 650 would cost me more than an SS. Something like an FZ8...fuggetaabouutit. So, it sorta forced me to by an SS, "best deal" in terms of HP for CC.

My experience going from a 500 to an SS, it's mind blowing! Doubling the power of a motorcycle while everything else stays leads to ridiculous acceleration. It will definitely give you the grins on throttle you're looking for.

HOWEVER, in all honesty, I'm not super pleased with my decision. While I get the grins from acceleration, it's a dangerous addiction. Most SS' will hit 100kmh in 1st, touch 160kmh in second. So if you want to wind it out, you get to shift...one gear! I ride occasionally with my buddy who still has his 500. Unless I'm dropping to 1st for some corners, I can barely loose the guy. When following him, I see him rev it out and click through a few gears, looks like fun...all I've done is rolled on in 2nd.

So that was the performance rant. The biggest issue I would have to say is seating position. It's Effin uncomfortable (I'm 5'10, 170). After a ride compared to my buddy on his 500 (very similar seating position to your Honda), I look like I've been hit by a truck. He's ready to put more miles on. Wrists, back, shoulders are all beat. Think the 2UP experience is better? My GF hates my SS. She much preferred the 500! Either her wrists hurt from resting against the tank, or my wrists hurt from her resting against me!

Now, as for twisties, I'm pretty sure at my skill level, I'm no faster on the SS than I was on my 500. I'm not one to push hard on the street (I don't like guard rails, trees etc) and would rather leave room for error. I think it takes a serious level of skill and experience to even exploit the limits of your 500 on the street. Going to a faster bike wont see you improve there. I come from a 4 wheel racing background and the same is true for cars. Noobs in GTRs can't seem to corner faster than an experienced CRX driver. The difference being overcooking a corner in a car and you slide, hopefully hit nothing. Slide on a bike and good luck to ya unless you know what you're doing...and even then, ask all those MotoGP riders who highside or lowside regularly.

So basically, if I were you, I would either hang on to the 500 for another year, get your M done so your insurance becomes reasonable and consider a higher displacement, comfy bike that will give you some good pull. Or perhaps a more upright seating positioned naked bike. I kinda wish I had gone that route...but I was impatient.

I know this is a stretch and likely won't happen, but is there anyone with an F3 that would let me take it out for a ride to get a feel for it?

Go to a Triumph dealership. Ride a Daytona 675. The riding position between the two is very similar - hyper aggressive. The bikes ride in a similar fashion as well (both 675cc triples, track oriented etc).
Riding on our Ontario straight roads, anything over 1.5-2 hours begins to hurt quite a bit. If you're at the Dragon or other such area with lots of twisties where you are constantly moving about, longer rides easily done (as long as you are somewhat in good "riding shape").

Wow Sal, thanks for the input! That does sound a lot like me. However, I do feel that I will be upgrading sooner or later to a SS. I would rather do it now when I can get good value for my current bike. Naked bikes and cruisers are not my cup of tea, and although I can appreciate their beauty, I would never be happy riding one.

I'm currently on a 675. Commuting on it isn't that great as the seating position is really uncomfortable. Even with my tank grips, it still feels heavy on my wrists. After an hour or so, it can be unbearable.

Eventually, I plan to make this bike strictly a track bike, and i'm gonna go to a Ninja 250 / CBR 500 for a commuter. I rode my buddy's GS500f recently and that thing is ridiculously fun. In all honesty, i'd probably have more fun on that bike on the street than my 675.

Good post! I'm also a noob and I know I'm going to upgrade to a SS before long, but you're reinforcing the idea that I'll want to keep my old beater around to run errands in the city and such.

Op i well match your price and add a extra $150 bucks for two hours on a Agusta F3 test ride ... ANY takers??.. :p

Go for the upgrade! It's something you need to experience first hand. However, the desire for creature comforts will eventually creep up, especially if you do a lot of riding and longer trips. It's not easy on the wrists and back. Once you get the speed and flash out of your system, you will likely want to go to a more comfortable bike.

So if you're just asking for assistance not advice, here goes:

No one in their right mind is going to let you "rent" an exotic motorcycle for $100, or any other amount other than the MSRP for that matter.

The F3 will be everything you expect and then some.
Open your checkbook, buy it post pics when you do.

Hope that helps.

Yep. If you want an F3, buy it. Research it, sure, but many people, myself included, by bikes all the time without riding them first. I suggest you take the poster up earlier that has one and discuss pros and cons with them.

Exotic cars don't fall over if you dump the clutch or stab the brakes.

Exactly. NO one rides my bike but me and the one or two people I know and trust a) in their skills and b) in their willingness and ability to pay for their errors.

Reading the thread I was just thinkg the same thing...

OP I agree with you, $100 surely must be a fair price to "rent" an F3 for an hour or so ;). I don't have an F3, but I'd sure like to ride one. when you get yours, can you let me know, I'd like to "rent" it for an hour may be two. I will even make sure they are really nice new brown bills that I pay you with.

We got a deal?

:p

Thanks guys. I find your input to be of the utmost value.

So the Big Questions is Op.... If i ask to RENT your bike once you get it Your going to say YES right ??

Sure. If you wanted to rent it from me with a significant deposit and you were doing so only because you couldn't do it at a dealership, and were planning on buying it, then we would talk.

Define significant please....none of my business on your $ but you'd be better off selling your 500 privately as a price of $5k is a huge drop. Hell if I could I'd pay you that right now for it!
